Check to see if any of the radiator hoses are clogged, the fan is working, and the fins on the radiators are not clogged. Then check the water pump.

When I bought a '98 new in '99 it overheated the day I took it out of the crate. It's a long time ago but I'm pretty sure the dealer said the thermostat switch was bad and replaced it under warranty. Apparently not a common problem but my bike only had 50 miles on it...Is the fan turning on at all? Obviously you may have another problem though as my bike can idle for awhile and not get that hot.

And there could be air trapped in the cooling passages. That prevents passage of coolant, causing overheating.

Just the rear cylinder? I'd look at blocked passage in a hose, or a kink. Check the routing.

The fix is free or cheap. Just information and effort. I envy you.
