Oil filter flow ?

Hey does anyone happen to know the direction of the oil flow through the oil cooler? (left to right or right to left)

I want to know because I want to prime the filter and figure I can idle the bike for a min with the downstream side discontected.

Odd question but I couldnt find flow direction in any service manuals, it shows coolant flow but not oil.

Thanks guys.

Why do you feel the need to "prime" the filter?

I just did a motor swap and the engine seems to run warmer than normal. My theory is that the cooler isnt full or is cavitated.

I already did a rad flush and am running purple ice so gotta eliminate variables. Its also an extra large cooler.

I love these threads, I will never get an answer...

It is well over half way, more like 2/3ds of the guage even after a highway run in 50*. I know this isnt right since it was never like this before the motor swap and my other VTR will easily cool itself under the same conditions ridded back to back on the same day.

Does anyone have an answer ??????

(not that I dont love the question game)

Did you use the same water pump or did the swap engine already have one. Maybe the impeller is damaged and flow is reduced.

If its warmer than usual and the temp barely goes down, that is either a stuck thermostat or the impeller is bad, possibly both.I'm having the same problem and come to the conclusion that is the problem with my bike.

My temp guage also bounces sometimes.which could be a indicator the sensor is bad.but thats a seperate problem.my fan come on sometimes when the water is flowing good.

One way to tell if its the thermostat, from a cold start, see how fast it gets hot.if its at half at about 5 minutes, give of take, good chance it just the thermostat.but the best bet would be to take it out and run it that way.that will give you a for sure answer.

The answer is, you have the answer at your finger tips

In the Knowledge Base Feedback, Questions on Knowledge Base articles., down load the service manual
http://www.superhawk996.net/Honda_VT...ice_Manual.pdf

Then read page 4-0 Lubrication System.. has a pretty picture and everything
.

And there ya go, self service answers.

It is funny how pissy you get when you don't get an answer you like chop, chop.....lol

But as you have now seen the oil filter and oil cooler are separate circuits.
So unless the by-pass has failed there is no reason to think the oil cooler is not flowing and there is no need to purge the air from the cooler....

No but 8541 dont you ever notice that it can be hard to get an answer to a (relatively) succinctly worded question?. I know the filter is seperate I am still suspect as to whether the cooler is getting filled/ full flow.

No worries and just messing with you.......

So if you look at the drawing on page 4-0 of the service manual you see that the clutch side line is (or should be) the feed line which would make the flywheel cover the return side.

Does that answer your question??

Huuh what? Im looking at the page now,,, it is exactly as I stated, 4-0 Lubrication System. Not sure how you can miss it,, there is a page number
4-0
, there are the words
Lubrication System
and then of course there is the FULL page picture of the Lubrication System.. All found in the service manual in the forum I linked to, at the specific thread I linked you to.

So your welcome I did the search, linking, and found the exact item you were looking for.. All's you had to do, was click on a link..

And what I get back is whining? .... Awesomeness I'll keep that in mind for next time.

OK guys, sorry if I sounded less than gratefull. Marquez you were right about the page info. And sorry about the championship wisecrack. Dont be sore, dont wanna be pissy.

I guess my sense of humor doesnt jump off the page in print. Its better in person. Really its pretty witty.

Now everyone go about your business.....

LOL, No worries, I was just returning the favor with some ribbing. No hard feelings at all.
I guess smiley button was broke, as I thought I added a few to that last post, but see none now.

I really like this site -for the brotherly love shown to each other.. 8541 the older smart-*** bro'. that is always there - to Tweety the grumpy, bored bro' that knows to much. and all the other bro's that are just as enjoyable to follow their progress to better their machines..
Just this thread has informed me that- I need to bleed the new SP1 oil cooler, installing on the 2001 S-hawk, and not to mention that it is always more entertaining than "dancing with the stars"...

I don't think the oil cooler is your problem. The oil cooler does not contribute much to the overall cooling of hte engine. If you are running hot I'd look elsewhere!

Yeah Jamie like I said I flushed the rad & am running water & purple ice. I am gonna check the thermostat but the motor only has 5k miles on it so I am slightly confounded. The only thing thats different is that I disabled the pair, which wouldnt heat it up.
