No manual, need to change oil

I got my bike this morning and was changing the oil and filter. I don't have the manual, but the guy at the Honda dealership where I bought the oil said it takes 3 1/2 quarts of oil. I don't think this is correct, as the oil isn't showing full in the oil window.
Can someone please tell me the correct amount it takes?

Also, is the 2004 sh fuel injected or carb?

Also, what is the black **** on the left side of the back, is it a choke?

I think the oil is 4.2 US quarts.

All the bikes are carbed.

Left side about where your knee would ride? That's the choke.

Go to "General Discussion" at the top is a series of "stickies" One of them about 3/4 down the list is Repair Manual. Download it! Memorize it! Say passages from it before you drink beer!

Make sure you hold the bike level to look at the glass window for oil level. There two little marks on the glass window frame that denote high and low levels. Don't fill it on the stand until you can see it because you will be way over!

The bike never really changed, just minor changes since '97, like the gauge cluster and colors.

Very few things are different. First off you have digital gauges and the 02 and back do not. For almost all the mechanical stuff nothing changed over the entire run of bikes. I have downloaded the manual and use it a lot. I have a hard copy that I bought right after buying the bike not knowing it was available for free here. It covers all the years so if you need anything specific don't be afraid to ask.

Thanks, Doug! I knew it was 4 plus a little. I have to admit I guessed. That kinda reflects the way I fill after a change. I put the four in then use the dipstick, window, what ever to make final adjustments. I always recheck the level after doing a running leak-check just to make sure that the filter is completely full.

Yeah! No ****!! I didn't think the server could do that but I guess it can! I had one response written and forgot to post it. Hit the forward button and responded again to another aspect of the topic and posted them both on my way out. They both came up 806. That's a first for me.

OK u asked {Also, what is the black **** on the left side of the back, is it a choke?} 1st question is have u had the bike long. 2nd is this your 1st bike. 3rd u live in Nashville TN? > U must live in Cal. u got to if u dont use the choke. Or u just dont get to ride much. Just asking not really inportent. The only thing that i can say to any new rider or person that gets a new bike is learn your new baby up and down. and take care of it if u want it to take care of u. And trust me u really want it to take care of u. Have fun on your trusty honda and be safe.

Thn darkone, and everyone else for the info. I will download the manual now.
This is not my first bike, but first speed bike. I had a Honda vtx1800, my first bike, and sold it to open my own business.
This is alot lighter and nimble and I am going to finish putting the oil in her now and go for a short ride while no traffic and get used to the handling.
I road the dragon on my vtx and it was an 800lb+ bike, so I am sure I can adapt to the sport bike, but a little shy with her right now. Its a beautiful bike and it was love at first site!

What is the proper oil level? In between the high and low?

Cool, I usually fill mine on the higher side because I love to throw up long wheelies.
