2 questions: what oil are you using? and are you, or was the previous owner stunting it?

The reason swordfish asks is that if you use an oil with "friction modifiers" that can create these kinds of issues.

and 6k is way early for a clutch with the right oil and no abuse.

Molybdenum is probably the most common friction reducer to look out for.

Oils Well That Ends Well, Part 1
Part One: What is motor oil really made of?
By Don Smith

Editor's Note: This is Part One of a special Sport Rider comparison test, where we unlock the mysteries and debunk some of the myths of motor oil. We examine just what goes into motor oil, why those ingredients are there and what it means for your engine. In the next issue, Part Two will feature a scientific analysis of all major motorcycle-specific motor oils, plus a wear and dyno test of specific oils to determine whether there is a power difference.

From my VTR manual : SAE 10W40 - API grade SE, SF or SG motor oil

I only know so oils that don't have the modifiers. not the ones that do. I know mobil 1 is my choice. GN4 is good. spectro gold is ok. motul is ok but gets dirty really fast. same for rotella.
