Ethanol removal

So we all know ethanol is evil. Destroys many components of bike fuel systems as well as lessens milage.

I just read an article in Motorcycle Consumer News (independant no advert mag) about removing it from fuel.

Since the ethanol itself is hygroscopic, you can actually just add water to the fuel (about 5% of its volume). Shake it up and wait an hour.

All the ethanol attaches to the water and sinks to the bottom. Of course you need a container with a valve to then drain this liquid out, but then you have ethanol free gas.

This practice has become common in small engine and marine applications since they suffer most from the addative.

You could remove some/most of the ethanol like that BUT, the ethanol is there as an oxigenation additive that is needed in the fuel. (like the MTBE it replaced)

If you remove the ethanol, I think you need to add an alternative oxigination additive to the fuel so that it will burn correctly. As removing the ethanol will also reduce octane

We need a fuel chemist to answer that definitively.

Yes, the article goes on to say you will need an octane additive to replace the lost component.

Thumper is an unknown quantity at this point
Thanks, but luckily boats have bigger problems with ethanol and since I live between two lakes non-ethanol gas is abundant in my area for boaters and us nuts that are willing to pay 30 cents more a gallon. Some even have 93 and 94 ethanol free.
