Engine Noise, NOT CCT, slides??

Got a 98' with 25K miles about a week ago. At idle there is a loud ticking comin from the top of the head, at about 4K revs it goes away. Gets slightly quieter when its warmed up.

Really doubt its ccts, I was thinkin either valves or carbs?

I dont know anything about twins, this is my first. My old cbr just had loud valves. My pops thinks is just rocker arms?? Do hawks have rocker arms?? Or am I just being paranoid?

ONE MORE THING. DONT REPLACE YOUR CCTS UNLESS U DO IT RIGHT.

Yeah, I wondered about this when I got my SH. Doesn't really sound like a cam chain slapping against metal, kind of like a fast "poof" sound under the tank? I just figured it's the carbs since it is most proficient around 2-3k rpm. I've searched and I think it's just one of the bikes quirks.

i would put money down that it is your valves!! that matches perfect to others discriptions of valve clearance being off. i have never experienced it because i have kept my valves adjusted.

so what do you mean dont install your new CCT unless you do it right? explain! im about to put one in on mine before a long trip. i have 22,000 miles on my 98

Speedhawk, check the Knowledge Base. There is a lengthy article on it and many, many, many threads on the subject.

Still could be valves, loose valve can tighten up as the engine gets warmer and metal expands.

Doubt is a dangerous thing if she goes poof cause you ignored it.

Twins are the same as most other late model in-line fours as far as how CCT and valves work and adjust. Just double the cames and CCT's of a 4 banger.

VTR doesn't have Rockers, reference the on-line parts fiche below. The cams (#3,4,5, or 6) sit on top of a bucket/shim type of arrangement and the cam lobe pushes directly down on the bucket (#9) that sets ontop of the shim (#16) that sits on top of the valve (#7 or 8). You adjust by changing shim thickness.

I took it to honda and they told me i was being paranoid. They said that the Hawks should make noise. Something about the valves being real tight from the factory especially the exhaust valves. Anyways, its good if u hear them. If u dont is when u should worry.

I don't know about that. I have nearly 30 K on mine and each time i checked them they have been in spec..

First check was at 800 miles , last check was a couple of months ago

Yeah, don't freak out, but still check the clearances, the front is a bit of a PITA, but it's doable.
I did mine this spring, might wanna check it out
