Electrical Problem? Need help!!
So i am riding down the street and approaching a stop sign on a beautiful summer evening and the old hawk decides to completely shut off. It happened that quick. I was riding and completely lost all power, and after the fact the bike would not turn on at all. A strange smell was coming from the tail of the bike. ( Stator??) I think the previous owner may have maybe moved the stator to the back and maybe thats what the smell was? But anyways i have no power and a weird smell, and clearly a lack of knowledge on the subject.. i know you guys know these bikes inside and out. Anyone have any knowledge that can help me??
Thanks,
Grant.
Thanks,

The stator is under the left side engine cover, the regulator/rectifier is under the tail piece (about the middle of your right thigh when you're seated on the bike).
Remove the seat and peek between the tail piece and the sub frame.

okay thanks man that makes sense.. i took off the seat and the smell was coming back there.. and i mean i am pretty sure thats all it could be is the r/r right? nothing else would make sense for it to just cut out like that and smell right in that area.
You can check the stator... but it most likely the R/R if it's the finless OEM part
check the resistance between the three yellow wires on the plug it should be between 0.2 - 0.5 ohms. Check for continuity between the wires as well. There should NOT be continuity if there is or the resistance measures other than the speced ohms you should replace the stator.

As with the other answers you will likely need a new battery and an RR. Testing these will tell for sure. Possibly it could be your battery's time was up. That just happened to me recently.
If the battery wont take a charge, replace it. Once you can start the bike you can check for abnormal voltage at the battery. Follow the instructions on this link:
