early vs late model fuel sending unit

I'm working on getting the parts together for the late model gauge swap. Looking on ebay there are a ton of early model fuel sending units. However there aren't any late model ones. There is one listed as '97-'05 and when asked the guy said he didn't know what year it came off of. Any way to tell by looking at it if it's an early or late model?

If the arm pivots and has a grey big plastic float its the newer... if its a fixed post with a wire going around it to a shiny cylinder its the older...

OK so the later one doesn't have the wire wrapped around the arm at all? Then the one in question is an older one. Why do you have mixed feelings about the swap?

Im still getting used to it... speedo is kind of hard to read without modifying the older tank or switching it the fuel guage doesnt read correctly... the rest of the digital part is cool and the tach is nice...

Any reason you can't just tweek the wire the float is on to adjust it's accuracy?

Also I think you missed my last question. So does the later model sending unit not have the wire wrapped around the float arm at all?

BeerHunter is an unknown quantity at this point
ebay.com 97-05 Superhawk-VTR1000 Sending

If this is the one you are talking about, it is an early model unit. The little cylinder at the end of the wires is the reserve sensor, and I do not believe that the newer units have this part. But there is no float on this ebay unit anyway.

EDIT: The newer type should not have any wires on the arm.

Just order it from ronayers new. Not too pricey. I recently did a similar swap but used a CBR600RR gauge. Big digital speedo, digitlal everything. 12hr clock.

NOTE. The rubber sealing ring on the 1st gen is a different size to the 2nd one.

The 1st gen it a low fuel sensor. The 2nd gen is a floating arm like in a toilet. NO SIMILARITIES. A gen1 will never send level unless you rebuild it with a float like I did but its next to impossible.

So doing some digging I found some pics of the two sensors. So now I know what I'm looking for. Looked it up on Hondapartsline.com and found it's only $44 so I'll probably just order one. I was hoping ot have one shipped out right away but they say they don't ship for 6-12 days which makes me think they don't have much in stock but actually order it from Honda, then ship it out. I'll check the other site you mentioned. If anyone has one they can ship out right away that'd be awesome. I'm just trying to get this mod done before my 5 day ride I'm leaving for early next week.

That is a very ambitous time frame. Have you got the dash working for speed and tach yet? Temp? (2 diff temp sensors).

You better get crackin.

Yeah I know it's a tight time frame. I've got the late model wire harness coming and it's supposed to be here on Friday, I've got the gauge cluster coming and it's supposed to be here Thursday. I won't do the swap before the ride if I can't get the fuel level sensor in time. But I don't care as much about the temp sensor. I did find one in a complete housing on ebay for like $7 plus $13 shipping which is a WHOLE lot better than the $35ish for just the sensor new.

But as I said if anyone has these and would be willing to throw them in a flat rate shipping box right away I'd be greatly appreciative!

Yeah I have some liquid sealant that I like to use. That way it still gets a good contact with the housing for a good ground.
