I noticed that the chain adjustment bolt on the right side is loose. It appears to be aligned because both sides are on the same mark. Is it supposed to be that loose. By loose I mean It is backed out a bit and I can turn it with my hand. Also since im here I have a few other things I noticed. I was riding last night and I let go of the handle bars for a sec and the I noticed a side to side wobble and seemed to pull to the left a bit. What might be the problem? And the last thing. When shifting from first to second most of the time it sounds like the gears grind. It goes into second but I hear that noise and can feel it. Any suggestions there. I have searched but havent really found alot.

 

Chain adjuster: If the axle nut is tight it shouldn't be an issue. You can tighten it a bit if it bothers you, but don't crank on it.

Wobble: Either loose or dimpled steering head bearings. Check looseness by having someone hold the bike upright and hold the rear brake. You roll the front wheel by hand forwards and backwards. That should show if you have play. As for dimples, you have to raise the bike by the frame and gently move the bars back and forth. The slightest dimple will be felt. Steering head bearings must be properly adjusted for this test though. Dimples are generally on the bottom race. With the bike elevated the forks will be resting on the top race.

Pulling to the left: Sit more to your right. Check rear wheel alignment.

1-2 shift: Normal. Shift quicker or at a lower rpm.

 

My right side chain adjuster screw goes slightly loose after tightening the axle too. I just make sure I'm pulling back on the tire when I tighten the axle. It hasn't been a problem.

See above for the wobble and the 1-2 clunk.

 

You might also check your front tire for "cupping", which is kind of a scalloping of the tread on the tire. Some bikes &/or tires are susceptible to this. Not necessarily a problem, but it can be irritating.

For the 1-2 shift problem I put in the Factory Pro Pro Shift detent arm & spring kit ($89 or so)- not the more expensive evo shift star and it did help a lot
