CCT Question.
CCT Question.
Just got to thinking after reading some posts about CCT's. I just picked up my hawk this past july with a little over 20,000 miles on it after I got it home.. Anyway for me to tell if it has stock CCT's? I haven't looked, and would think that could be the best idea but, didn't want to tear into it right away. Could a 98 with that many miles on it still have stock CCT's?
simple visual inspection, the rear CCT is visible from the right side of the bike.
If it is gray aluminum it is stock.. if it is anodized red with a bolt through it, it is an APE cct.
If it is shaped similar to the APE only painted it is one of the rare TMB ccts. (only available for a few months last year)
And yes, 20k on stockers is not unusual.. They can go at any time.. as early as 1400 miles is new low record, and over 50k is the high.

the APC are very easy to spot.. kind of sweet.

Unfortunately looks like I am running stock. Kind of figured that when the gentlemen I bought the bike from said the only thing he did was add a K&N Air Filter. Is the CCT something I should look at immediately or as needed?
They are something you need to take care of before they fail.. After is too late and requires a rebuild of the engine along with new valves and possibly new pistons.
As to when they fail, it is impossible to tell ahead of time. Usually there is little or no warning and mileage seems to have no firm relevance to failure occurrences.
More 98's have had reports of failures than other years.. But then again I think more 98s exist than other years, so that makes sense.

CCT
Any advice on this subject? APE over stock? Is this a service center issue or can they be swapped out by user with no wrenching expirience? If done at a dealer, what kind of expense is involved typically speaking?

There is the link Hamrhed. I was under the impression it was not a tough conversion, guess I will find out if the weather ever gets nice and if I get the go ahead from my better half to order them. One APE's site, is that 51.65 for both or for one?

Thanx Kators for the link. I think I can handle this. I hope to take delivery of my bird on Sunday- that is if its not snowing. Ive never owned a twin and never joined a forum. I don't own this bike yet but I am already diggin it. I'm a little nervous about ownership but with the forum w/ me I think it will be a great expirience. Had I known you could click on little smiley faces I would have joined a forum alot sooner.
The link in my signature to "APE CCTs" is to a PDF I made of my adventure in doing the install.
My advice is read several how to write ups (the one on this site, the one on the UK firestorm site, etc) and then decide for yourself how you will proceed.
The main thing to remember if you only remove the rear valve/cam cover is after properly removing the rear CCT to rotate the engine counter clockwise 450 degrees before removing the front CCT.

Ah, yeah, I see the require 2 deal now. Kind of a bummer, but that's how it goes. I am going to see if a guy here in town can order them for me, he has a harley shop but also can get parts for whatever. Likes to give me **** for owning a VTX instead of a Harley, but doesn't say much when I am asking for parts for my hawk.
Hamrhed, I was pretty much the same way before I bought my hawk. Wanted to get back into a sport bike, but wasn't sure what I wanted. Had my eye on a cbr but hated to drop to a 600 after owning a 750 VFR. Found a hawk about 3 hours away from, test drove it once, and was hooked. There fun bikes to be sure.

It looks like CRU is making their own manual one now too.. though I know of no one that uses them, it is a very simple piece and if it fits it should be fine.

So a cheaper option, though I do like my APEs.

Doing this repair during the winter months makes all the sense in the world. Take your time, read a lot, look at Calitoz white paper on the subject. It IS not difficult - it IS exact so pay attention and don't rush it.
In terms of longevity of the bike it's critical.
Don't forget to order the gaskets!!!!!! Some kits come with them - some don't.
Really, guys, it's a hundred bucks for the good stuff. Most of you spend that buying cigarettes in two weeks. At least I would be at today's prices if I still did it.
There is a financial "wake up call" new riders and returning riders all go through. Right after I bought my Superhawk, I realized that the gear required, some mechanical issues (like CCT's) were out there, I was, "****! I bought this thing for a great price but now I can't afford to ride it."
It took a few months and I shopped my *** off. By spring I was ready, the bike was ready - it was magic to get on the bike in February and have all these little issues - they are (at a minimum $100 a pop) - out of the play on the road. I turned every twenty that was offered all winter to support the campaign. Once it's done - it's DONE!
Everytime I get on the bike it makes me smile.

Hey NuHawk- get any snow today? It just missed us in S.A. I might try to get my new bike tomorrow instead of Sunday. I'm getting pumped. Good advise on the CCT. I'll take my time with it. Like to read anyway.
Yeah, will be definitely trying to get this done this winter. Got a good question, with the APE CCT's, they are manual CCT's, with them on, does the chain ever get loose after putting them to where you have to tear back into everything to adjust them again?
I’ll be home late DEC, but busy with family till late JAN. drop me a PM if your looking for a hand.
At 20k put the APEs in. Your looking at $100 for the APEs vs $1000 for a top end rebuild. mine went out at 15K on the road, wrecked the valves etc. and yeah they look way cooler.
Or mod your's as shown here

If I had seen this before shelling out $120.00 for the APEs it's what I'd have gone with, being a cheap bastard, I mean frugal, and all.
Ya might even be able to get some frugal bastard to send ya his old ones, even exchange for your's once ya got em changed out. So ya can do the mod first then just change em out following the write up for the apes.

If you stood in one spot for thirty seconds you might get hit with ten flakes. It was very brief here. (tg) Some of us were braced. It was 22f at the weather station for nw austin and 25.2f at the nursery when I got in this morning 0400.
TxSuperChicken knows this bike (and several others) very well as a rider and a wrench. He has a wounded comrad at BAMC and I think he will want to visit him when he gets back. Hawkrider says he can do a CCT changeout in 90 minutes. Part of that is having the right tools.
I haven't cleared it, but I could possibly arrange for the work to occur in Seguin. I have access to a well equipped shop to help the work go more smoothly.
