Braced Swingarm

Has anyone done or seen a braced swingarm swap? Got the rear half of my bike torn down and keep thinking that a swingarm change might be an interesting mod. What problems are there? Shock linkage? Alignment? Any thoughts or suggestions greatly appreciated. Cheers....

I recall reading of one chap using a brace fron an early R1 too. I haven't donc the brace yet but am still thinking (lusting?) about it....

Mine has the 900rr brace added and filled in on right, plus a bunch more metal added.

Have a look at this one. The guy used an early R1 brace and under slung the caliper looks really good. I am in the middle of doing one using the 900rr brace.

Very nice job. Not sure what the advantage is with the caliper relocation though other than the bling factor. The final piece of the puzzle would be to powdercoat it black, mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Just a quick question or those who have braced arms on their VTRs: can you feel any difference when riding the bike (and be honest now )?

thanks

Mik, you can tell a difference! Honestly, that's why I did it...running down the interstate highway at 70 mph (never faster) the stock rear end felt loose and I didn't like it, so I put on the 900rr braced swingarm and all the looseness is gone! It's like magic bro

Well apart from the almighty bling factor the ony real reason would be that the brace is in the way of the caliper mount, so the VTR bracket won't fit, and likely the brace from the donor R1 didn't either...

When you use the 900RR brace it's usually possible to use that bracket... I think atleast?

I'll never find out at this rate as I by pure accident (yeah right!) bougth a swingarm from an 929 instead... So I'm going to attempt to force those two parts to co-exist instead... I think I need loads of therapy... altough my shrinks say it's ok with theraputic work, like knitting... So I guess I'm alright...

Sorry, mods are fun

However, I'd do it again in a minute! In fact, I have an the old 2002 swingarm that I can sell ya so you don't have to look for one to brace up if you want it

Yep, looks just like mine before I had it welded. I have since had it powdercoated and am just waiting on getting it on the bike. Looking forward to it

What did you do for caliper mount? I cut off the original channel inside the swingarm (for the SHK caliper mount plate) and welded on the channel from the 900rr swingarm and used that mount plate. The caliper now sits high enough to clear the brace and looks cool. Also had to change the brake line, used a custom HEL 2" longer than stock.

I also cut the old channel and had the one from the 900RR arm welded in its place (also picked up a 900RR caliper bracket). I had not had everything assembled yet but it seems this is the standard procedure used by those who have added the brace.
