battery issue

well, my batter died the other day and am going through the process of testing my electrical system. i just got done testing my battery. the manual says to run it with the HI beam on and with the engine at 5k rpm's. i did just that, and the voltage reading went farther down the more i revved the engine. at 5k it read about 12.8v. according to the manual, it should read 13.5 to 15.5v at 5k rpm's. when i let the engine idle, it read around 13.5v. im going to wait until the morning to continue testing and going through the manual to see how to do it all. does anyone have any experience with this or have any advice for me?

Was the battery about dead when you tested the charging system?

I wouldn't labor over that one too long. Get a new one and your worries are over.

Basic test, check voltage at battery with the bike not running. It should be around 12v. Start the bike, you should see somthing higher than the 12v once it is running. Generally around 13 to 15v. Most of the time when a reg/rec goes your voltage will go through the roof 18+v. If your battery is not fully charged you numbers will be lower. Good Luck

If your R/R is a non finned unit and you ride in hotter weather, just replace it now rather than later when it breaks on you mid ride. (like happened to me) If you have a finned unit, have fun troubleshooting!
