Bad Regulator/ rectifier? Any one try this one?

1998 VTR: While riding yesterday, first the Tach quit, then the Speedo and temp gauge quit, then the engine.

I unplugged the headlight, waited a few min, bump started her and got her home, She would backfire and quit, I would wait and repeat.

I Recharged batt, now I don't have a charge at the battery. (Multimeter at batt terminals, 5000 RPM)

After searching this Forum, It looks like a bad R/R? She has 13,000 miles.

Has anyone tried this R/R? I would rather use the stock plug if possible..

THAT LOOKS LIKE A REGULAR HONDA DEAL. I WOULD STAY FROM IT, I INSTALLED A 06 R6 AND NEVER LOOKED BACK. U HAVE TO MOD THE CONNECTORS BUT IT'S EZ AS RIDIING IN THE RAIN.

I have a brand new, never installed R/R from the local Honda dealer. I think it came from Bike Bandit because it's not Honda OEM. It has the fins and the proper connector. I bought it thinking I had a bad R/R only to find out the connector under the front of the seat near the tank was fried. I've $80 in it and I'll sent it Priortiy Mail for free if you're interested.

I got the one nuhawk is describing - the upgraded Honda unit - its bigger and has cooling fins on it and so far no issues and simplest swap.

NCDave, Thanks, I did not notice the HK location or the $20.00!!! Shipping, but still a decent price I suppose if it is an aftermarket attempt at a better product.. Is it made by these guys:

Black Hawk, I desire to NOT have to cut the stock wire loom, but searching this Forum, I agree with you, many have liked the R 6 unit.

NuHawk, I am very interested! I need to go to my shop today and check for other problems, just like you found, including checking the stator. If all checks out, I would like to make a deal. I'll check today...and Get back to you.

Sincerely, Steve

Fixed!!!

Got the new R/R from Nuhawk and she is charging now! 13.8-9 volts @ 5000 RPM.

Thanks for all the help, I did the R/R test and the old unit has 1 bad diode. The Service manual linked from this site confirmed it was the R/R when the wiring and Stator checked out OK.

Thanks for a great Forum guys!
