Arghh - ANOTHER prob - Engine cutting out when put into gear
Methinks there's a dam curse on me and Firestorms.
Just yesterday I fitted a new Yamaha R1 Regulator as the old one was burned out and was making my battery die.
Well, I fitted the above item, all working fine.
So (as the sun's out) got on my bike for a ride, all ready to go, clutch in, clicked into gear. Engine Cut''s out!
Ehhhh?
check side stand (I have fallen foul of that before) Yes, it's up, ok, try again, Engine starts, clutch in, click into gear. Engine Cuts Out.
Oh for ***'s sake !!!!
Then noticed, the yellow light for the stand down was not coming on (odd, it used to - 4 days ago, the last time I rode the bike)
Looked under the seat at that stupid plastic thing with all the connectors inside it. (seems oily, dunno why) so pulled ALL the connectors apart and wobbled them (keeping an eye on the yellow light)
Nope, nothing.
So took the swivel switch off the stand, and twisted it around and pressed it in a bit, ah-ha, the light came on, but a very iffy, not very positive on.
Thought, may be some crap in the swivel so gave it a good cleaning with engine cleaner and got all the grease and grit and stuff off, it, turning it around many times, and it got better.
Fitted back on bike, and seems ok (ish)
When the bike is upright the switch/dashboard yellow light works fine.
As you lean the bike onto the stand (and the stand kinda moves sideways as the weight of the bike goes onto it) the yellow light goes off.
Ok, I thought, not perfect, but works on, when the bikes upright.
Biking gear back on, started up 1st try, clutch in, into gear. Engine Cuts Out!!!

I feel like Basil Faulty and going and getting a branch and giving it a dam good thrashing!
Now, I've not actually touched ANYTHING over the last few days, when fitting the regulator, apart from just moving some wires about (in that cluster of connectors directly behind the seat)
I know there's a switch on the clutch level, but I've been no where near that.
As I was straining the battery (when the regulator was shot) I'm just wondering is some fuse has blown, or somethings kicked out, or come loose.
Any ideas what I should check out 1st?
Or could it all be down to that rotating swtich on the side stand?
But, is the light is OFF that means the bike should think the stand is UP so if anything it should allow me to ride with the stand down if there was any thought.
So I'm buggered AGAIN!!!!
Pray this is the last thing to sort.

What is lighty to be at fault (and what can I check) if the engine cuts out as soon as I put the bike into gear?

to be honest, the only "actual" wiring i did was to unplug the spade connectors off the old burnt out Honda Regulator, and plug fresh spade connectors onto the Yamaha R1 Regulator.

Mine looks pretty much identical to his photo's
I may have moved some wires as I was cleaning and checking stuff, but did not disconnect anything else.
I know it's just tracing the fault that's the issue.
I need to rule some things out.

Sounds like a bad sidestand switch.

No idea why it "Just" decided to go tempremental, but hey, just one of those things.
I would like to bypass the switch to prove it is actually this round switch that is at fault.
Perhaps jumping it under the seat, by shorting the connection it makes when the stand is normally up.
The bike is working perfect, ticking over and revving etc etc. So there's noting REALLY wrong.
It's just something that's killing the enging (electrics) as soon as it's physically put into gear.
So, does anyone know how I jump/bypass this stand/safety switch?
Must be easy...... yes?

Looking at this diagram:
If I just connect the two wires (circled in RED) then that should bypass the Stand Switch.... Yes?
Or just connect the Green/White wire on the Ignition Control Module to Earth (bike frame) then it would be the same thing. As the bike would then think the stand is up all the time.

Yup, that'll do it, but did you double check that ground coming off the side stand switch? Also, check the battery connections. I've seen some really strange **** happen because one was loose (ie, the bike started and ran fine but the FI light kept coming on [RC51]).

Battery Terminals are both lovely and tight for sure.
I've not checked anything electrical (with a meter) as yet, as I had to rush out after I found the bike was messing about unexpectidly.
I just need to work out which block of connectors (under the seat/behind the fuel tank) is the one that the side stand switch connects too.
From memory (as it's almost midnight here now) there were White, Black and Green square connector blocks in that bundle and also a round block with a couple of bullet connecters)
My manual only shows a black/white photo, so unsure which it is.

Just thought I'd let you know.
Found the GREEN connector block under the seat (behind the tank) unplugged, and shorted the green (ground) and green/white (signal) connectors out with a pair of tweezers, and indeed, with these pins shorted, the bike will start even in gear with the clutch pulled in.
So, deff, it's the sidestand switch that's worn out.
Phoned my local bike shop (where you pay full/normal honda prices)
New Switch = £46 UK Pounds, which is $87 US dollars.
huh!!!! no way am paying that.
Ebay here we come

Here's the little sucker:
Found the GREEN connector block under the seat (behind the tank) unplugged, and shorted the green (ground) and green/white (signal) connectors out with a pair of tweezers, and indeed, with these pins shorted, the bike will start even in gear with the clutch pulled in.

I'd guess it's a stock design, as I said, there's no need to redesign this item for every bike is there.
If only I could get the little sucker apart I may be able to mend/improve it.
It just seems to be all pressed together and won't come apart though

I'm sure you could bypass it for now until you get a new or used one - just would have to be sure your have your side stand up before you take off... Older bikes never had these things so you can get by without it but be careful!

Oh yes, well, I can just cut the block connector off the current side stand switch and wire the 2 cables (green and green/white) together so the bike always thinks the stand is up.
Then put a BIG sticker between the bars saying "SIDE STAND" so I remember.
But you are quite right, NONE of my old bikes from 20ish years ago (Yamaha RD200 etc etc) had these things.
And yes, I rode off with my side stand down a few times, only to be supprised at the 1st left hand corner!
I just VERY annoyed at the rip-off price of the new replacement in the UK.
In the US it's $27 or $37 (depending where you buy it)
But in the UK it's $87 from a official dealer.
Bet that would make anyone here REALLY ANNOYED
