Anyone tried one? They sound to cheap to be dependable.

That's the old style, prone to internal meltdown failure. Look for the unit with cast cooling fins on it, more reliable but it also costs more.

Might be good just to have as a cheap spare. Something to keep in the backpack to get you home when your goes out 500 miles from home, like they always do.

The feedback on the auction does not match what the actual buyers wrote. Surprised he even put links.

You might try one of these. http://www.electrosport.com/street/s...reet_46500.php
I have not used one because the cost is kinda high, but at least they have the cooling fins. I used one of an '07 R6. The mod only took about an hour or so and it is working great.

I bought a used R/R from a R1 '01. It has cooling fins and are known to last. I also installed a cpu cooling fan since the air flow around the R/R wasn't good enough with the Agusta tail. Before the fan was installed the R/R got quite hot when riding on hot summer days, but now those problems are long gone!!

+1 for the R/R off of a R1/R6. And the 1 hour to replace is about right. Make sure that you take the time to heat shrink the connections and solder them. This is not something that you want to fail.

I used a R/R from an '04 R6 and it works great. I found it on ebay for 45 bucks and it only took like 40 minutes to install.

The R/R went out on my 98 Hawk. The problem is that Honda did not use a R/R with a cast heat sink (cooling fins). Remember that 30-40 amps go through this unit and that generates a lot of heat, leading to premature failure. I bought an Electro sport replacement from Dennis Kirk for $95 ( DK part # 201247). Its a bit pricey, but has an aluminum heat sink, stock connection and very good reliability. Well worth the investment.
Cheers!!
