Time to lighten a flywheel

Just got done cleaning the lathe and making some adjustments... and figured why not start the flywheel project..
So chucked up the old crank I was given and parted the flywheel end from the rest..

I have a nice new flywheel arbor now....ready to mount a flywheel and see what I can remove from it.

I have the diagram from Roger Ditchfield version I may follow, or not.. Have yet to decide.

The only thing I would add is with Rodgers mod the flywheel needs to be rebalanced (per Rodger) with the simpler Moriwaki Mod it doesn't need to be rebalanced (per Moriwaki)

Not sure if you had that info or not

RCVTR is an unknown quantity at this point
The only thing I would add is there's no D in Roger.

"Moriwaki" remove .500" from the outside diameter of the flywheel.

I may start with this and see what I think.. but intend on going further.

Still looking for a US shop that will balance the after product..

Performance Engine and Machine did mine have not used it yet but they did it for me. Think it was around $50.00. I plan on them balancing my engine for me also.

Just for curiosity, how is balancing done? I mean, static balancing doesnīt seems worth in this case, only dynamic. And what parts are to balance? Only flywheel or with crankshaft? I donīt know how it was done in factory ...

These questions are reasons, together with info from Roger that balancing is not needed when lightening flywheel is done properly, that I have not my flywheel balanced. On lightened flywheel there were three balancing holes, on my flywheel removed from bike is only one. And I donīt know if these are done only for flywheel body, or for more parts.

Flywheel lightened per Roger illustration, only steel flywheel rotor, not magnet what I see sometimes in pics ...:

Hey Stumpy, Do you think "Performance, Engine and Machine" would do a complete rotating assembly(crank, rods, flywheel, pistons) ??

Second question- Who is the preferred shop , to have do the Moriwaki mod to the flywheel??

Not sure what your question actually is but you dynamically balance them and it is just the flywheel, unless you are doing an engine build then you can do both.

All the info I have received or heard from Roger is that the flywheel does need to be balanced after doing his mod.

The different number of holes from the factory is common

As for taking the magnets off, I have never done it myself so I don't know the procedure for doing it or if it even can be done safely.

8541Hawk: question is whether flywheel is balanced from the factory together with crankshaft (or other parts). Because if right way is to balance with crankshaft, then there is no point to balance flywheel itself.

Relating taking magnets off, I saw it in other topics and I donīt think it is good idea, that was just for information and not question for you.

Anyway, thanks.

Update on flywheel info, as Mr Ditchfield replied my questions

- lightening only on steel rotor, not on magnet
- balancing is not needed if you follow Rogerīs dimensions
- anyway flywheel is dynamically balanced separately from crankshaft in Honda factory
