Suspension Swap Data
Suspension Swap Data
Hello SuperHawkers! I have a 1998 that I am doing a full suspension swap on - RaceTech 0.95 spring with Gold Valve Compression valves in the front. I have also acquired a new-to-me YZF-1000 rear that will be rebuilt.
This is not a DIY job, I took it to a guy local to me who is an expert in very fast bikes. He has the information for the front springs, but we can't find conversion data for the YZF rear. I know there are slight differences in length and stroke of this unit versus stock.
Does anyone here have a resource or experience with this information? I am about 225 full kit. The bike is going to be for road use and occasional track days.
Oh, yeah. Happy new year to you!

You said YZF-1000. Did you mean YZF-1000R or R1? Probably important to clarify as they're two different bikes with two different shocks. I personally haven't heard of anyone using a YZF-1000R shock on a superhawk. There is some info if you search regarding R1 shocks on here and VTR1000.org. Might want to reach out to Jaime Daugherty (daughertymotorsports.com) as he builds his own shocks for our bikes.
Oh, that's unfortunate. I did indeed buy the unit from a 1997 YZF-1000R acting on advice from the first shop I went to - I have been looking to make this happen for about six months but could not find someone with enough experience with sport bike suspensions to take it on.
That shop told me that there was no way an R1 shock would fit and suggested the YZF-1000R because it has a detached reservoir (and would likely not require mod to the airbox), and that the stock shock on the SuperHawk is 346mm length with 60mm stroke and the YZF is 340(+12-0) mm length and 69mm stoke so it seemed like the logical choice to not have to shim or fabricate to fit properly.
I'd looked at the DMR BD40 unit and its just not in my budget... I will reach out to Jamie and get an opinion. The YZF shock wasn't expensive, but money is money. Thank you for the response!
