Simple lower footpegs!

Using my Suzuki Bandit as inspiration, I found a simple way to lower the foot pegs. You'll need the footpeg "holders" from a kawasaki zx900 or similiar. The ZX9 part number is: 34003-1474 but you can find these on ebay for much less.

Since I didn't have the stock honda pegs, I also used the zx pegs. They have very short peg feelers so I'm guessing that the overall ground clearance is about the same. The distance doesn't look all that much lower but the feeling (especially to my old knees) is dramatic.

Re: Simple lower footpegs!

You mount these by removing the exhaust mid-pipe bolts including the rubber isolaters and insert the kawa holder into the hole. Here's the only mod you need to do: you have to slightly drill out the hole on the mounting tab of the exhaust pipe for the new bolt to fit. Sorry, but this means removing the pipes to do it right. Hard headed types may be able to do it on the bike!

The Honda oem exhaust bolt is the wrong size for the kawasaki holder. Upon assembly, getting to the bolt head between the footpeg holder and the swingarm is TIGHT and a PITA!!! <EDIT: I now have ratcheting wrenches which are PERFECT for this and it's now quite easy to install/remove! If you don't own some of these, this is a perfect excuse to get some. You'll luv 'em!> I've found that there's more clearance with the bike on the sidestand instead of a rear stand. The right side is fairly open compared to the left. The kawa setup uses an allen head bolt that is useless because of the tight clearance. I don't know what bolt size I used but it's the one honda uses for the banjo bolt on a brake caliper but even that's a tad long so I also used a couple of washers on the backside (pictured) to take up the slack. Clean and lube everything so you can hand (finger) tighten it down as far as possible because you can only use a wrench about 1/8 of a turn at a time. I STRONGLY advise thread lock for this!!!!

Re: Simple lower footpegs!

Here's a pic of a zx6r footpeg. It's a little more "racy" than the 9 pegs I settled on.

There's enough range in the shifter to get it correctly adjusted. The brake pedal also has some range adjustment too but I still have to slightly lift my toes to apply it.

Re: Simple lower footpegs!

Finally, here's a pic of the guinea pig suzuki bandit footpeg. It looks too big for my tastes and the overly large vibration reduction weight didn't help with the V2 power pulses so I went with the ZX units. BTW, the weight is removeable but I thought the thick rubber pads were working against the idea of lowering pegs!

Since my used 98 didn't have stock pegs, I can't give a comparison on vibes. The new location still mounts to the same overall bracket but they do directly contact the pipes. So far, a 3 hour ride has been my longest stint with them and they felt fine; no numbness, etc. Edit: all day rides are fine too.

The kawasaki footpeg holder is approx. 1 or 2 mm smaller than the hole. Someone might come up with a way to make a rubber mount like the OEM exhaust bolt holder.

Re: Simple lower footpegs!

Fartin' around a little more with this, I made some cosmetic spacers out of pvc that I painted to make this a little more sano and get rid of the washers.

The kawasaki holders I got off ebay weren't exactly the same (different years). One was a tad longer so I had to make different length spacers. Mounted they look much better.

Need more ground clearance for a track day/serious twisties ride? Just remove the circlips, pins, and springs while leaving the holders in place and move the pegs back up to the original location. Shouldn't take more than 5 minutes to do.

Cool, very very informative and detailed. Ive been looking for something like this for a while. Im 6'4" and long rides kill my long *** legs.

I think I see you have Leo Vince high mounts like me. Glad to see this doesnt interfere with the pipe.

Re: Simple lower footpegs!

Yeah, no problems with the original mounts getting in the way or with my high mounts (2 bros). In fact, the new location allows me to move my heels out away from the pipes so I don't have to arch my foot and let it sit flatter.

If anyone is seriously considering this mod, PM ASAP.

Re: Simple lower footpegs!

100mm wide? Do you mean pixels?

Anyway, what's your sag on both ends? Running stock suspension? Hang off more. On the street? Slow down! I think that the lowered kawi pegs without feelers are around the same height as the stock units with the feelers on.

Rear sets are on ebay all the time; around $300 or so.

Resurrecting an old thread. Anyone tried this lately? Away from the track I'm thinking more comfort and standard ride, and the strong likelyhood of taking the SH on my trip in September instead of the Concours. I've got superbike bars and risers on order, and also found some 90s version ZX9 pegs to lower.

So, no one going the "old fart" route these days, huh? I received my superbike bars, some risers, and zx9 footpegs over the weekend. Hopefully over the course of this week I can make the conversion. Except for drilling two holes for the risers, most of it looks to be bolt-on.

I will be old farting very soon. Legs are killing me. If u would please post some pics of the pegs when your'e done. I was waiting for Jamie to get some more shift levers. I thought the longer lever would help with adjustment.

I'll start a new thread with before and after pics once I begin. There are some pics above of the different footpeg though that might give you an idea. I think they will work with stock levers for me since I wear a size 12 to begin with.

I have a set of these pegs if you want. The previous owner had this mod. I didn't particularly care for it and it busted on of the alum. loops on the pipe hanger. Let me know who wants them...pay shipping and they are yours.
