rear shock spacer?
I (and many others) have shock spacers in place and they work well. The only caveat (and this comes straight from a very knowledgeable source, Roger Ditchfield at Revolution Racing in the UK, a real VTR guru) is that it is NOT to be used with a stock front-end set-up (ie. unmodified forks) as it may cause the motorcycle to become dangerously unstable.
Ok I'm going to through in my 2 cents... Before I got my Penske I used a 3mm spacer between the frame and the shock mount. It quickened the stearing slightly in a good way. Did this for two years with never a shake, shimmy or wobble. I also had stock front forks.
I've been using a 5mm spacer (home made) for the last 2 years. Never had a problem. I use a 15mm spacer (home made) when I do track days. Yes, turn in is improved quite a bit, but not what I would consider "instability". You do need to watch for the shock linkage dogbone contacting the exhaust pipe at full (or near full) compression. If you keep an eye on the pipe and the dogbone and look for signs of contact (scuffing/scratching). If you see that, take 2-3mm out of your washer stack until the problem stops.
I also lower the triple clamps about 40mm for track days as well. The combination of the two works for me. Try/experiment at your own risk!

I've been running a 6mm spacer with a stock front end for almost 7 years now. 1000's of racetrack miles without a steering damper (I've never needed it on the VTR) speaks to the fact that's A-OK with the stock front.
