Muffler repacking. What to use? What lasts?

I discovered my cans are empty. How well does stainless steel wool last on superhawks? Is their another material I could use that is available at a hardware or a Home Depot? Would it work well on it's own or would I need to wrap the wool with something like fiberglass insulation or...?

I'm one of those DIY guys who hates paying 20x the cost of a product just because of it's advertised application. I also live in an area full if idiots... I mean, "consumers". It's hard to find odd materials around here. Even the motorcycle shops don't carry things as common as bar ends and main jets. They may have stuffing (doubt it) but it'll be expencive. I'm a business owner in America so, needless to say, money it tight. That's why I'm after a cheap solution.

I've always used a repack kit, never tried steel wool or anything like that. They are fairly inexpensive and at least you know it'll work the first time for sure. Here's a link to what I've used on my cans.
Two Brothers Racing Muffler Repack Kit - Street Bike - Motorcycle Superstore
The price isnt too terrible, $40 to do both cans is pretty fair.

Try HVAC supply house the glass from on demand water heater would hold up and the steel wool keeps it from scorching

I spent a quality day repacking my 2 bros cans. I figured the steel wool will last so used a roll of it & then the fiberglass.

WELL.......it lasts because it doesnt do anything. Meaning it became an offensive motogp bike sound-wise. SO....the next wknd back in the driveway and ANOTHER repack. This time as much FMF (or 2bro) muffler glass as I could wrap in there. Way nicer boomier sound.

Side note, protect your hands and arms while doing it cuz it will seriously irritate your skin for DAYS. (and I have thick skin).

I put fiberglass in there for now. I'm going to order some ceramic blanket and give it a try.

Will do. Sounds better now with something in the cans. It's more of a deep pop then a snap and decel isn't so damn loud.

Buy the Two Brothers kits,it lasts years and doesn't disintegrate like the cheap brands. I even had enough left to repack the Supertrapp on my 1983 Honda FT500 Ascot.

The ceramic blanket insulation is good for 2850 F.
