I think Bluesman might have the right idea here! I was looking around for pics of the 04' and thereabouts VFR and the tank does bare a resemblance....

You torture us Blingmaster.

It would seem to me that the practical place to put extra fuel is under the seat. My undertray has room for about a gallon in a breadloaf sized tank. This would be routed, in series from the main tank, then to the carbs. It would be above the float bowls so it would work. A larger tank could be used with a fuel pump. In either case a hugger fender would be a necessary safety addition. The issue would be filling. Unless you were willing to plumb a larger connector, it would take forever to gas a spare tank through the delivery lines.

To me that's over-engineering the problem. Wait a week or so, I'm going to do a long range durability beta test on my solution. Alpha test was very positive!

Oh sure. Like I said before, this mod does carry the possiblity of this and I really don't want to be like Colin (in this instance anyway) nor for anyone else.

This isn't a true bolt on mod and involves some fabrication so I really want to make sure it works well.

So you don't think we can all decide whether to do it for ourselves, mommy?

Re: Making a Larger Gas Tank

Maybe he's trying to prevent a run on gas tanks on Ebay?

PS: Its obvious which one it is. You gave away too much in the pic S.B.

Check out the big brain on Brad!*

Yes, as you guys have surmised, it's a 6th gen VFR tank. I had one of those and did a lot of work on it thus I got to know the tank/airbox layout well enough to gamble on it. Don't rush out on this yet, as it requires many different mods (it's a fuel injected tank in case you don't know) and is not quite the same size (duh).

I'm going to give it a long range durability test the latter part of this week and weekend (approx 1500 miles) so I will report on how it fared AND how I made it all work.

Here's some pics on the overall look to keep you "pacified" till I can get this finished.

Wow! Just "Wow!"

Comparing to what I attempted - your solution so is much better (and much safer). And I am not afraid of work to be done - with my previous bike I pulled more complicated mods....but what an idea and courage! Big thanks from me, this is truly awesome.

I am off to breakers yard

Re: Making a Larger Gas Tank

well, call me stupid but I saw VFR tank on eBay in UK and asked friend to get it for me (I am in Belgium). Can't resist - I love that idea.
It arrived today. I am waiting for write-up impatiently

look at lewy's idea on the absolute bottom post in the link above. and then more pics on next page. i think this would be the most efficient way to get another 30 miles out of the tank for the time being. simple too.

I forgot to mention that I started a new link on my VFR tank mod:

Hmm, didn't for me. The adove link sent me to the forums index page instead of the thread itself. Why? Because the original thread had been moved to the knowledge base section yet the link wasn't updated. It has been now. Try it again.

my enlarged vtr tank

About 2.5 years ago, I bought a used but pefect vtr tank on ebay, including rubber bits & petcock for $100. I cut the sides and rear, lifted the top without breaking the internal drain and vent tubes, spliced a "band" of steel in and ended up with about 5 usable gallons. Its a bit (1.75") taller but no wider. Note in the "Before" pics the black line drawn showing the approximate location of the cut. The paint does not match perfectly (too orange) but good enough. I may repaint and add the decals under the clear coat but I like being "stealthy", as I removed the stick-on "superhawk" from the fairing the day after I bought my 98 in 2000 (along with the PAIR system and did a bafflectomy, later adding 2Bros alluminum slip-ons). I use the big tank for "touring", maybe you'll see it if we make it down to NC & are able to hook up with you guys.

Attached are some pics...
