lower chin fairing

Does anyone know for sure:
Do you have to run the little lip fairing on the bike? I bought the bike used and it had an aftermarket large lower fairing. I do not have the stock piece. I like the look off.

the nice part about the chin fairing though is that it give the oil filter and exhaust a little shield from all the road crud the front tire kicks up. it does look kind of cool sans fairing though

I have never seen it up close on the bike. I assume it is just for looks and keeping it clean - not any actual protection.
