Lost rear shock

I am guessing riding in 12 degree F weather may not have helped the shock that has 30k on it. I ordered a CBR900 from Ebay today.

I didn't know a CBR900 shock would fit out VTR's, does it take modification to fit?

Theres a post that shows the older 900 do fit. They have a hose and can off to the side. Maybe 96 body style.

As far as I know nothing other than a VTR shock fits without modification though check with Jamie to make sure.

Correct - there is nothing that will fit directly. Everything requires some sort of modification to work on the VTR. Sorry!

I have both shocks here because I have a guy in town that parts out bikes. The CBR shock is about an inch shorter looking at it. Would it work and adjust the ride height with the links???

They only fit once JamieD has done his magic to them... Talk to him about upgrades...

Other than that, get a used OEM one...

Sorry, that wouldn't work at all. Raising/lowering links really screw up the linkage so they are to be avoided if all possible.

I tackled the job today. I set that shock in to find out that the spring hits the swing arm. I had the upper bolt not come out completely. Is this the normal? Put in the stock shock. I also found that the exhaust cans have been rubbing the swing arm for a long time. I may want to change it out and get the high pipes on it. I hope that the swing arm comes out easily.

That is only because the shock you are trying to install is not even close to being able to work. If it was modified to be correct for your VTR it would be just fine.

People that have been members of the forum since 2005, 2006 and 2007 and who really know their stuff and have your best interests at heart have said that a stock CBR900 shock won't work. You shouldn't have been surprised that it didn't work. You'd be far happier with 98VTRrider's Penske or a CBR600F4i shock reworked by Jamie Daugherty.

Keep in mind the cbr shock was given to me to see if it would work. It wasnt really a waste of time to check. I guess I will end up upgrading in the future.
