I'll just hold the throttle open at time to maintain speed but I too seem to spens allot of time coasting.

A oil pressure gague would be nice and I've thought about adding an aftermarket one but I want one that looks like it should be there not like something I've added.

Yea, inside the windscreen in a black plastic molded body held on by slightly longer mirror bolts.
(gears in head grind)
Maybe just three LEDs in a super compact body that sticks anywhere,
One for low or no pressure, and the other two for low and high pressure, all anyone would really need if its calibrated and accurate.
So if the high pressure level LED(set just below nominal) isnt on, you know oil pressure is less than optimal ( lugging it )
Could build something like that pretty cheap maybe.

Also by knowing oil pressure you can tell when something is going bad inside the motor
and prevent big $$ wasted.
in other words the stock idiot light isnt of much value to you except total oil pressure loss.
Lots of thing happen in engines to cause changes in oil pressure that can damage the engine and not trigger the idiot light. ( overheated oil , worn out oil, or the wrong oil period.)

Me too, that's funny as hell. Unfortunately I was hoping to go out today but the weather is not cooperating. At the very least it is going to rain for the next 3 days but they are calling for snow as well.

This bike has a lot of power and fun to offer. But please don't feel the need to explore said power before you're ready, and at the right time. All bikes can get out of control in a split second if you let them. I can't count how many times I've lost the back end of my hawk twisting the crap out of the throttle in a turn, but I've always recovered and kept the wheels on the ground because it didn't come as a surprise when it happened.

Just take it easy and get used to the torque of a twin before trying anything crazy, or before deciding to make any big mods. Most people who ride the bike for a while decide to go with suspension before power.

Here is a slight update to the bike. I just spoke with a friend who knew the guy I purchased the bike from. He told me that he is 99% sure he did not re-jet the bike when he put the new exhaust on. Thant being said it seems to run fine. There is no rough idol, it does not stall or miss.....

when i jetted my hawk it really woke up. in the short time i have been riding the super hawk i have come to love the v-twin power plant. i have accidently raised the front tire more times than i can count on stock gearing. after riding with a group of inline fours through some twisty back roads every one of them had a new respect for the hawk. i mean this thing rides like its on rails.

I will definately have to look into re-jetting then. Does anyone know which needle I should use for colder mountain climates with the Jardine RT-1 exhaust?

Also, does anyone know roughly it should cost? Unfortunately, I don't know how to do this myself so I will be dependant on the local dealer doing this for me.

after reading all of these posts...it has left me a little confused. I have a 2002 SH, it is totally stock aside from a better battery, and I would like to know what I should do to get better acceleration from 0-60. Im not worried about my top speed so much. Like what was already mentioned, how often is there a need for those speeds? I am going on a big trip to ride the dragon and I am a little worried that my SH will have trouble being able to juggle the Interstate trip there and the twisties once we get to our destination.

What is the best all around mod as far as the sprockets go?

ps. if anyone knows any good cheap way to improve gas mileage that would be great. My SH is my only source of transportation so better gas mileage would be awesome!

Go up a tooth on the front sprocket to save gas.
If you want roll-on wheelies try some of the others combos.

you can't "quickly" make the hawk any faster 0-60, that asside the superhawk when it first came out was one of the faster 0-60 bike made... so it all comes down to how you ride her.

Just bring it up kind of slowly to around 6500 then whack the throttle open and see what happens

For stock look of oil pressure indicator, get a tri-color LED and install it instead of low oil light. no physical changes to the hawk and better than stock oil light. I'm thinking of doing that on mine. just need to figure out details.

Only you can decide what is the best all around mod as far as sprockets go. Circuit Burner recommends going up a tooth on the countershaft sprocket to make the gearing even taller. Most everyone else shortens the gearing by dropping a tooth in the front and going up one or two teeth in the rear.
I have -1 front, +2 rear and prefer it over stock gearing. Gas mileage is not a priority for me. Yet.

Great idea.
Just need a circuit that swaps polarities and also for the 3rd color, a voltage ramp. Not sure which color would be connected to what power, but usually on the package of the LED.

The best mod I've done to mine and any bike I've ever ridden is READING a book. I'm sure there are plenty out there but Total Control by Lee Parks made me a much faster and safer rider. So now my bike is faster because I ride it faster and know how to carry speed through corners (with plenty of practice of course).

Another good way to help mileage and power is to keep your chain lubed, properly adjusted, and your tires properly inflated (whatever that may be?). Oh and don't lug the engine below 3k rpm thinking you are getting better fuel mileage cause you're not...it just vibrates and creates more friction and will wear everything out faster. I generally keep mine around 4-5k and I'm getting >40mpg(corrected according to GPS) consistently, no matter how I ride it.

thanks guys!..... I had never ridden a superhawk before i bought mine and now i feel a little dissapointed in the power/acceleration. Ive been through both the ABATE training courses, beginners and advanced and have been riding for 6 years on 4 different bikes. In saying this im not proving that im a pro by any means. i am saying that when i got absolutely blown away by a 97 cbr f3 on a straight away the other day, it was not due to the fact that i dont know how to ride a bike well.

Its a totally stock vtr aside from the handle grips and new slightly larger battery. Would exhaust really help out my acceleration problems?

Two road test 1/4 mile stats I found for the F3 show ETs of 11.3xx

In most all tests the VTR was at least a little quicker than that.

Given equal rider weight and skill getting embarrassed by an F3 in a straight line? I'd guess either the CBR was modded or your VTR isn't running up to snuff.

That must not have been a stock 97 F3.

I still think you are not used to the bike.
I was coming back from Superbike two weeks ago and while already cruising at 75mph did a short sprint up to 140 (according to the spedo). Let me tell ya, It was pulling. And my bike is completely stock.

This is ridiculous. 90% rider 10% bike. I can assure I have no trouble keeping up with just about anything/anyone out there on my STOCK Hawk. Including riding the Dragon.

Yea, but not everyone has a co-pilot and a counter weight for left turns like you have ....

an F4i shouldn't have a prayer against the hawk. let alone an F3. something's wrong, or we are all missing a part of the story.
