Idle hands.....

you know the rest, lol

Presenting the inspiration for my latest project:

Not sure what you gents think but I love the tidy look of the rear brake master set-up on this bike. So, it being winter in Canada, and my brain being afflicted with OCMD, I am inspired to try something similar.

The MC on the picture comes from a Honda CRF motocross bike. Regrettably, it uses a small 3/8" piston (about 9.5mm), much too small for the VTR which uses a 14mm piston OEM. After doing some "rootin' around", I noticed that the similar Nissin units used on RM-Z and KX bikes use a significantly larger 1/2" piston (12.7mm), which is much closer size-wise to the VTR unit. In fact, I figure it's close enough to try a swap.

I picked one up cheap on eBay and will see if the mounting holes line up when it gets here (if not, it will be going back up for sale). If it does, I will replacing the banjo with a pressure switch unit to tidy up the wiring (as on the picture). I will also be looking for a "blingy" anodized cover (blue) to finish it off.

Will keep you posted

You mean you don't like the high tech/low weight race look I've seen folks do and just chop the brake line a couple inches above the mc and jam a bolt in it? Seriously though that does look cool let us know if it works out.

surely from the same crowd who stretch swingarms to no end, remove a rotor on the front (and, of course, have a plethora of spikes).....

Most likely they use DOT4, which is blue, but that is used more on Harley's and such

I have never seen blue brake fluidI have used DOT 4, but it was the same colour(almost transparent) like the 5.1

IIRC, I think the blue fluid is Motul (RF600?), the guys at Speedzilla rave about it

Here is an MC like the one I bought:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/2005-2009-Su...0572e4&vxp=mtr

You will notice that the resvoir window is not on the back but on teh side (teh inside once mounted). This may complicate checking the fluid level slightly but, IMO, this minor inconvenience was worth it for getting a significantly larger piston than the Honda unit.

I may have to work at making an adaptor/bracket if the holes don`t line up but we`ll get to that in due course.....

It's not RF600 (tried it but my SP2 system didn't like it for some reason and have gone back to "standard" fluid)

The only fluid I have seen that is blue is the silicone based DOT5 but who really knows.

No worries..... though make sure you check the thread pitch, as it might be different than Honda, so you get the right banjo bolt.

Actually, a quick seach turned up the yz250f/450f rear master cylinder, which is 11 mm, and the exact same shape as the one in your original picture...

Hmm... Somehow I ended up buying one of the ones I found... Imagine that...

BTW, I blame you on this one... Whole heartedly...

Thanks Markus, glad I could be a bad influence for you, lol

I too had checked the Yamaha MC before settling on the RM (same as KX) unit. I simply wantex to get as close to the OEM 14mm diameter as possible, and that was with the RM/KX unit. Truth be told, I was bummed that the Honda`s Nissin unit had such a small piston diameter as I really like the location of the fluid level window and would have loved fitting one of the snazzy red anodized HRC covers sold on eBay. Oh well, function before form.....

As far as banjo bolt threads are concerned, Brembo uses M10x1.0 while Nissin uses M10x1.25. As all Jap bikes come with Nissin, it`s a universal fit....

Thanks Mike, I forgot to mention that is Silicone based and for what ever reason they use it allot on Harley D's, now I remember clearly

Oh, not to worry... I'm bound to come up with a stupid idea sooner or later that will rub of on you... Us OCMD people likes having friends to influence, you know...

I figured that the difference between 11 mm and 14 mm piston size will be negible really in normal usage... And since it takes quite some effort to lock up the rear on the VTR with the stock mastercylinder, even if the smaller cylinder will increase pressure, and make it "easier" to lock up, it will probably require enough travel that you will figure out before hand that you are being silly... It might be a little less progressive than stock, but not that much really...
