Fuel filters installed

Not sure if you guys do this but I have been trying to install fuel filters for like 2yrs now. Finally got some that would fit and put em in.

Read an article about a guy who had crud from the tank trash his carbs and know that feeling all too well. $10 for the 2 filters so very cheap insurance.

Also carved a new tank rubber mount (side one) out of hard rubber.

That filter looks like the ones sold at Advance Auto. I was thinking about using something like this as well, just never got around to it yet. If possible, could you tell us the rough dimmensions of that filter, so we know what in fact fits in that space?

Well, that is why the pic. Its like 1.25" x 1.25". I took the pic before installing the 2nd one, but the 2nd one went on the straight part of the tubing. (just behind the throttle cable linkage)

Nice job!

Hey smokinjoe73

Nice install.. I just did mine a few weeks ago and am very happy. I too hated the idea of the collective muck in my tank getting through that pretty crappy plastic in-tank filter to erode needles and jets down stream..

Little different install as mines the 19Lt tank and the vacuum operated fuel value.
Plus I used a re-usable Golan filter. 10micron mesh. Really simple to clean and reinstall. Can recommend to anyone. Flow rate must be good as its servicing both floates without being sucked dry!

Observation

Hey.. is that a shimmed rear shock tower I see in the pic?

How does that go as a mod? Im thinking about doing it myself in conjunction with a Race Tech springs upgrade.

Any observations worth mentioning?

Yeah, shock is shimmed. You will wonder how you lived without it. Bike turns on intuition compared to not shimmed.

Used some high tech equipment to make the spacer out of a large washer. This pic then a jigsaw with a metal blade. You can stack more than on if you want.

That's a nice CNC lathe your got there Joe! Lol..
So have you also built the front forks with stiffer springs to make the most of this new found rake angle?

Yeah, I wrote the fork thing up somewhere but I increase springload with spacers and added a bit of heavier oil. Tried the RT .95 but they were way too stifff for me & my riding.

YMMV. I only race on the track & transport on the street so wanted a softer spring. Just be sure to check front sag & geometry or you will negate the benefit of raising the rear.

Noted.. am planning on taking it to a suspension specialist who deals with RT but also sets-up suspension for the individual bike and rider. Was actually he who mentioned coupling the fork re-build with a shim on the rear and correctly setting preload and sag whilst there in the workshop.

EMGO 14-34481 Fuel Filters

1987-1988 Honda - Motorcycle CBR1000F Hurricane Fuel Filter - Emgo - JCWhitney

Last time I bought 8 and they were like $3 each though $10 now but sales person said if I ordered quantity they would discount to $7 each

I've run them for 11+ years and change them annually

Joe, I'm really having a hard time finding filters, around here, that are the size of the ones you have. What brand and part# are the ones that you found?
Thank You

The ones I used were actually had from my local aprillia dealer. I will look around to see what online is similar. If he was closer I would just ride over and get some for you and ship it..

Try chapparral, dennis kirk, motorcycle superstore for them. And if I am near there in the next couple days I will grab a bunch. Its in Brooklyn & I am in Queens now.

Joe, Thanks for the quick response. I'll check around at some more of the dealers around here.

2 weeks ago I've got 2 fuel filters for my VTR'98.
I checked all shelves at local oreily auto shop, opened each box , merged diameters, checked 50-60 boxes, and I had 3 types of filters in finish. Best choice in my case was 'fram', I'll post pics of installed filters and name + part-number tonight. I still have original boxes, they have 2 hoses and camps in kit.

I got one similar to this at O'Reilly auto parts for about $4. Home Depot carries them as well, for lawn mowers.
I like having a totally clear filter, it makes diagnosing fuel problems much easier.

Just do this and you can diagnose all of your problems at once

What is the I.D. of the inlet/outlet as well as the O.D./I.D. & length of the filter "body" of this filter? The VTR carburetors are the largest Honda ever used on ANY vehicle, and as you know the VTR is a thirsty beast and requires unimpeded flow rates. The EMGO 14-34481 has done the job for me and I'm concerned anything with less than the OEM hose I.D. (+.301"/7.7mm) and a smaller filter body section volume will be too restrictive.

See attached pics of the EMGO filter.

I don't have any idea, but it flows fuel pretty well. There's another one that I prefer that's more slender, so it's easier to place inline.

That's a scientific response if I ever heard one.

I still am not clear on either filter mfgr/part number.

Filters are rated by gpm and psi output. The EMGO filter is actually rated to feed a Honda GL1200/1500 and other larger displacement engines...

See pic
