Aftermarket exhaust question

I see everyone talking about these good deals they find on ebay or craigslist fo aftermarket pipes and im wondering, do the pipes have to strictly for a honda superhawk or do they come in general sizes that you can swap from bike to bike? I just cant seem to find anything thats affordable and wondered if I was just unaware of this. I am new to the custom/aftermarket world. I have had A few bikes over the years but now I am getting out of that beat it up and rag on it stage and want to mod it out and make A sick machine that scares people!!

Yeah the pipes, specifically the midpipes, have to be for a superhawk. Some mufflers of the same brand may swap from bike to bike if they're the same size, like from an rc51, but you need midpipes from the same company. For instance, I'm sure you can take two brothers mufflers from an rc51 and put them on two brothers midpipes from a superhawk. You can also once in awhile find different brands of mids and mufflers that will work with each other because they use the same diameter and mounting method, like chrome high mount jardine mids and d&d mufflers, but again the midpipes have to be for a superhawk-the bend is specific. A right side rc51 midpipe will work on a superhawk, but the left is a little different. Having said all that it's going to be a lot easier to just buy a complete set for a superhawk than mix and match.

Captainchaos,

Thanks for the info. I had thought about fabricating my own midpipes to turn my stock cans into high mounts. Any idea of someone who has done this or where you can get just the pipe to mount the stock cans up?

You can certainly do that, as I did for my custom system.

But it will be dearer than buying a set designed specifically for the VTR.

The cans can work on lots of bikes. Sound and performance might be hit or miss. The midpipes are specific.
In general, I would "think" you would want cans designed for a twin vs a four cyl. I've heard (read) that the exhaust pulses of a big twin are more violent than the smoother 4's, and harder on pipes.

The stock cans and midpipes are one piece, so you have to cut the cans off and have them welded up to aftermarket or custom made midpipes, or once cut have something expanded/welded/whatever on the cans so they can slip on and off the midpipes. For me it seems like a lot of work for stock mufflers but maybe you like heavy and quiet

I'm pretty lowbudjet these days and am super happy with my OEM pipes after i gave them a baffelectomy. Of course they are still heavy as hell and I had the good fortune of timeing my baffelectomy with a K&N Air Filter and Jet Kit instalation/dyno tune. The experts on this sight might toss there' two cents in as to whether a baffelectomy might hurt performance due to air/fuel mixture. You know, back pressure and, um, other stuff... Anyway my pipes sound great and are aruguably more free flowing.

No matter what you do to the pipes or the intake, it all affects your jetting.
So as far as final stage tuing, its all in the jetting.
