185k's (120mph) Just doesn't cut it ...

Hi all, This is my first thread/post on a forum so here goes ... I have a 2000 Firestorm aka SuperHawk, but is an import with a 185k speed cut. Does anyone know if the speed cut is a signal sent to the ecu from the cluster or, speed sensor to the ecu ? As soon as I hit 185, it;s like hitting a wall ... the bike slows to 175 then speeds back up ....then down back and forth .. I'm considering purchasing an ECU from the US or UK ... any advise would be great .. thanks

It's part of the ECU, so the cluster and speed sensor has nothing to do with it... swap the ECU and you will be fine...

Found that Limiter!!

Unbolt the ferring, and remove the cluster. Unscrew the back cover of the cluster. On the speedo side, you will see the following wires. Green Black. Black Brown. Red Green and Pink Green. Take note of that pink green wire. (Do not touch it. That is the speed sensor wire for the speedo from the gearbox) Looking at the back of the speedo (cluster), you will see a second pink green wire that is just off the the left that is screwed at the bottom on a line of 4 screwed in wires. Unscrew that second pink and green wire, tape it up. And there you have it. Speed limiter removed. So in short, look for the pink and green wire that is as close to the center of the cluster as possible, and unscrew and tape up. It should take around 10 minutes. EASY AS! The longest part is removing the ferring and 3 cluster bolts. - You don;t even need to unplug the loom. If you pull the cluster right apart there is a little chip in there that sends the cut signal to the ecu. I had a Firestorm that was limited to 185k's, after a 10 minute job, and a 20 minute ride, I have my bike now rev limiting in top gear around 265 . . . PLEASE REMEMBER ... RESPECT THE POWER AND SPEED. ONE WRONG BLINK AND IT'LL BE CURTAINS. BE SAFE.

So you're saying your Firestorm will hit the rev limiter at 164 miles per hour?

It got to 240 very quick then crept up to around 260-265 before it started spluttering, was doing from memory around 9700 rpm. The last 15ish k's took forever. I doubt it had much left though.. As a side note, the restrictor plates have been removed from carbs which helped immensely.

Indicated speed perhaps..... but short of a full build, the stock or lightly modded VTR is a we bit short on HP to be pulling a true 166mph.... or at least all 5 I have owned, ridden and worked on.

I also have a firestorm but I'm still in Europe. How did you get your storm to the US?

Firestorms in North America

I have seen at least one Firestorm for sale at a dealership here in Alberta, Canada so they do make their way to North America...it was already sold at what appeared to be a ridiculously high price so I really took no further interest in it
