What swingarms will work?

Okay, i've been searching for the answer to this, and am coming up pretty much dry...

I would like to do a VFR800 conversion, but has anyone attempted to use a 600RR, or one of the other Honda swingarms, in a somewhat direct swap? I find it hard to believe that the VTR swingarm was only used on the VTR...

600RR?!?!
Careful there.
It's true the VTR swingarm was only used on the VTR.

You'll run into a lot of fab work because the VTR swingarm is shorter than most and the linkage is so much different.

Well, all roads are pointing to the VFR swinger... Luckily enough, I don't have to worry about the top shock mount - custom frame...

rc51 will work just as easily.
both require work to get there.
929 and 954 can work also i believe.

Why?

It's the only bike (honda) that I can think of that bolts to the engine case and not the frame.

vfr is a sss and still requires work. it isn't a simple "I have a vfr swingarm, let's throw it on today to see what it looks like"

I have done VFR 800 swingarm conversion and it looks great..see my pix in thread about installing VFR swingarm.
I assume that all Honda swinarms would work as long as they are meant to be attached to engine, not frame?!

Is this conversion hard? Special fab work? Problems or Limitations.

954 and 929 also had this arrangement, didn't they?

Nope, like most sportbikes the swing arm is bolted to the frame not the engine. The SH is one of the few where the engine is a stressed member.

I've got CBR929, CBR600RR and many other swingarms here and I can say none of them are very close. All would require machining, welding, fabrication, custom bearings, frame modifications or all of the above. Unless you have access to a TIG welder and a full machine shop you probably want to think about doing something else. If you do, then go for it!!!

Jamie,
of all the swingarms mentioned rc51 appears to be easiest. dont have to move shock like on the vfr800 swap. and you dont have to mod the exhaust either. you do have to make new linkage though. i just need to finish mine.

hawxter996....

My understanding is you need to relocate the swingarm pivot location on the RC swingarm (move it backwards towarsd the tire).... are you saying that's not the case, and it's basically bolt on with a few spacers and the custom linkages?

it really depends on how **** you are. i have to research what spacers ive used. but the combination ive come up with puts the arm right where it needs to be. i have verified the wheel alignment and it came out perfect.no need to move shock or fab new exhaust.you will have to mod the left side superhawk roller bearing spacer, needs to be made shorter or just use the 51 item with an additional spacer.now remember this is the SP2 arm the SP1 will not fit.im going a little crazy on mine, im going to fab some plates to allow me to use cbr or rc rearsets.im also working on an under tail exhaust that i will reveal when im happy with the fit. im not to worried about the extended wheelbase just yet,but that may change later. im kinda going for a combined moto gp, suzuka endurance look. just trying to decide what style body work.

I've not tried an RC51. I did measure my friend's bike and it didn't look very close. The key is not to just make it bolt up but rather to maintain the wheel centerline. Just fitting it on there is not the hard part, most of the time the mounting points need to be shifted side-to-side keep the wheel on center. This is the hard part. If I can find an RC51 swingarm on eBay within my budget (cheap!) then I might give that a shot.

Just a thought.... After adding the 900rr bracing to my swingarm, I have a slight clearance prob on left side with the exhaust..... I got the Two Bros full system w/ high mounted carbon fiber cans, and the front of the cans slightly touch the bracing.... a bit of adjusting and it isn't so bad... may not be any such prob with other cans and stock exhaust or another full exhaust system.

quick question about the rc51 swingarm. how much longer does it make the bike? Also I assume with the swingarm the superhawk shock just bolts right up correct?

The rc51 swingarm is about 3in longer than your stock vtr swingarm. If you look under my posts you can see how I went about fitting it to my vtr.

no not a bolt on you have to fab new linkage for the shock.and different spacers for the swingarm to mount to motor.

In the 9th post under my posting "couple pics of my superhawk" explains how I fitted it to the bike. Other than starting over again and digitally documenting it step by step, what more do you need to know? If someone has the time and money I am willing to do it again.

some of us were just hoping for some more detailed photos is all.
especially of your linkage . im mostly done with my linkage just curious how you did yours.
not to worried about length of arm, just yet.
finishing linkage and my exhaust design is 1st priority.
just need to find someone to weld this stainless tubing.
