subframe modification

Bought A 99 SH without its subframe and fairings and my first step into getting her back on the road is getting a subframe and tail on her. I have an rc51 tail and Im planning on buying the rc51 subframe to attach to the Superhawk. Does anyone have any suggestions about how I should mount the two lower bolts? Brackets? welding? Not sure which would be the best route. Anyone with any experience with this please chime in as its my first time going down this route on a bike. Also any suggestions for the subframe/tail aside from mine are welcome. Not a huge fan of the stock tail so maybe leave that one out. Real excited to become apart of the SH family!!! I am most likely going down the street fighter route with everything else for financial reasons, at least for now. Thanks in advance

Do a search for "tail swap" and "streetfighter", you'll come up with quite a few ideas. I've seen R1 and 600rr tails swapped on fairly easy and most posts have detailed enough pics that you should be able to figure out how they did it.

ya I did try that and found quite a few tail swaps. Just nobody realy going into any detail about fitting the actual subframe. There was one member, "seaton" or something close to that, who had fabd up some brackets but I cant find the thread. I remember emailing him a little while ago, but no response yet.

I swapped my tail with a cbr1000rr unit
Had a perfect rear subframe and a busted up one.
Cut the btm rails off the busted up one ,and tig weld it,when I was happy with the length, to the good one.

wow, see I didnt even think about that. I do have access to some pieces of a stock subframe too. I would have a little trouble welding steel to aluminum, but Im sure I can get a shop around here to do it. Thanks for the idea! Dont know how I didnt see your thread during the search.

Unless your local shop is going to use friction or explosive welding to join the too don't trust anyone who says they can weld it. Braze sure, but not weld.

Yea I would definitely be taking the frame in if I went down that route. Im still thinking that making brackets might be a little easier. Just debating on how safe that will be in the end.

I was thinking of a bracket of some sort as well.
But if it failed down the track,I didnt want the seat suddenly drop down while I was riding.
So went for this setup for piece of mind, and it didnt take long to do.
And looks a hell of alot better

Yes your tail came out gorgeous! How much do you think a fab shop in the area would charge to weld two steel connections to the aluminum subframe. I know the weld requires a more complex technique and don't have any idea as to how much. This is assuming that I can find a shop to do this without hassling me with liability issues.

we are all alcoholics over here it cost me a carton of Jack daniels
Is it possible to cut the rc51 btm rail off, then attach it with another
piece of alloy.
If you know someone who can TIG weld it might be the better option
This was my first time at doing a mod like this as well
Price I was quoted was $200to $300 from a fab place

You can't (that is CAN NOT) weld steel to aluminum. Outside of NASA level equipment that would cost more than your bike and car, and maybe house to do.

But for much less they can fab up some aluminum in the shape of the steel pieces that you bring in and weld that to the subframe.
