Question about undertails (year to year difference)

Bought an undertail from the classifieds and since im new to this, i might either just not be able to figure out how this thing mounts, or there is a variation from year to year. I have an 01 hawk, and wondered if the tail from a 98 is much different? If so ill just relist it and look for a year specific one. The one i bought was from this ad: https://www.superhawkforum.com/forum...ad.php?t=20569

When i tried lining everything up last night, it just seemed way off, OR like i said earlier, i dont know what im doing. It almost seems like id have to cut half of the stock fender off, then bolt it up, but i was under the impression that you removed the entire stock fender and replaced it with the undertail.

Thanks in advance for any help!

SlowHAWK is an unknown quantity at this point
Your assmuption is right about either cutting parts or totally removing the inner.... these things aren't really engineered to be a total replacement part....

When I did mine... I cut the stock part jsut behind the battery... so that I didn't have to worry about mounting that... I then formed a tray in sheet alum and bolted it to the subframe to hold the electronics... then mounted the undertail....

You may be able to trim enough of the stock fender away to not have to make a tray for the electronics and still make it fit... I just said the hell with it since I had most of the rear of the bike off anyway...

These things can be a pain depending on which one you get....

Mike,

The stock fender on my '98 (the bike your undertail came off of) has been heavily modified in the license plate area to allow the undertail to mount up.
I don't think you can run the undertail without using part of the stock rear fender.
I can take some pics of my fender that show what it looks like if that will help.

Nope i think you gotta cut some stuff in order to fit it on there. i have a mototech and i did

i basicly cut the entire thing out between the 2 side rails and the cross brace and glued in a new piece of flat plastic to get rid of that obnoxious tool tray

what kind of undertail is it? I put a rumble racing one on my bike and had to cut alot off of the stock fender so it would fit

Here's some pics of the remains of the original rear fender on my '98.
Please note, it was already fixed up when I bought the bike!!
I'm certain that with a bit of planning the job could be done in a much more sanitary manner.

Glad the pics were of help.
When you get to trimming your fender, don't use a dull chainsaw, like the dolt who trimmed mine!!
