There are multiple regs both state and federal concerning ALL lighting, but what you can and cannot do really does depend on the level of enforcement where you live. Here on the prairie (SD) pretty much anything goes.My superchicken is LOUD and I aint been stopped yet!!

Give it time. Speed cameras are here, many states have mc noise testing, SD does have a law about tampering with EPA controlled components, and now a proposal to save gas for an ew 55 mph national speed limit (as was orignally put into law by Trickey Dick, hense the phrase just "Just disckin along at 55" http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/...n4233477.shtml). Not to far in the future, the wonderful black boxes on the latest cars and bikes will morph into sending a report via GPS that you've broken the speed limit and a ticket will be emailed you for speeding along with a road use tax bill (like in London now). Auto black boxes today have an event recorder that can be downloaded with your speed at the time of an accident, as well as whether you hit the brakes, fi you had your cruise control on, set belt buckled, etc..

Believe me, before too long Big Brother will have you to in SD by the gonads!

The EPA has federal jurisdiction, This is a federal law. Federal penalties are usually pretty severe. Dynojet ran into this issue a few months ago.

I got singled out LOL

I'm all for keeping things legal lighting-wise. However my safety is #1 concern followed by the other people out on the road.

i'm not a fan of HID 'kits' (those plug and play ones) because they often times cause more harm than good. not from the riders standpoint most of the time but from the oncomers because the HID kit usually has the wrong focal point and also is being used in a halogen designed reflector housing that is going to throw some excessive glare above and around the 'cutoff'.

I am however a fan of HID retrofitting even though it means your lights will be 'illegal' due to modifying the existing stock housing to accomidate a OEM HID projector. Now it being 'OEM' doesn't mean that my headlight mod would be legal. That just means I'm using equipment that has met or surpassed any performance requirements from the manufacture . Many people think that since you have a "DOT Approved" or use "OEM" components on lighting mods, that you'll still be legal. IIRC if you modify the OEM housing of anything you are no longer covered by this 'gray area'. Granted the quality of the HID projector retrofit and safety is directly related to the quality of the beam aiming and overall install. This is why its CRITICAL to make sure your beam is within aiming spec and also that its horizontally straight when the bike is level. I take great care in my mods to make myself more safe but also take others safety into consideration that I won't be blinding anyone or causing any unsafe conditions for other motorists.

We used to have a valueable member on our HIDPlanet forum that worked for the NHTSA and was part of their #108 lighting division. He always kept us in the loop of regulations and also of banned HID kit suppliers when the ban hit. Sadly he has retired and has moved on from our forums. He was a great resource for accurate and valueable information. Great thread on the ban http://www.hidplanet.com/forums/view...t=1003&start=0

As mentioned check with your local laws and regulations if you feel you might have an issue with the fuzz in your neck of the woods. Every state is different and you'd be suprised how much they vary. Happy modding
