whiskey tango foxtrot...over!

omg!! so I am leaving on my camping trip Saturday am. start heading down the highway and I notice something doesnt feel right on my left grip. I look down and my flippin bar end is gone!! ok wtf? when did this happen? I get to a red light and look, and the damn thing is BROKEN off. No... it didnt unscrew. It SNAPPED off!! Unflippin believable! No it hasnt been dumped for those who are going to ask. I dont know how I am going to get it out and put a new one in. I should take pics. It's about the only thing that would do it justice.

It was NEVER dropped, and it just snapped off like that? That's ridiculous...it had to have some kind of a hairline crack in it or something already

At least it was just a bar end...I rode around missing both bar-ends for like a month....lol

As far as getting it out, that might be a toughy... If you have access to a compressor, put a blower nozzle under that grip and blow it up with air so you can slip it off, and see how much of that end is left to grab...otherwise you might be looking at drilling it out

Forget drilling. Get a piece of narrow-diameter threaded rod and JB Weld it to the bar-end. Wait for it to set and wham-o, out she comes.

I'm not getting what exactly happened. Did the center screw to the bar end snap off inside the anchor in the bar or is the whole thing gone - center screw and bar end? If you look at the parts fiche you might be able to see what all the parts look like and then figure out what is missing. I do agree with the others that if it is snapped on in the anchor then the bike was put down - however gently - but put down. A very soft drop, if you will, but enough force to break that screw - easy! Good luck! Like your pictures!

Can you just screw the bar end screw all the way into whats left of the threaded part of the inner bar weight and pull it out with some vise grips? I'm assuming the end of the inner bar weight broke off with the bar end or am I wrong? Or did the screw break off and is in there, I hope not

Anyway that's pretty strange but those inner bar weights didn't look like the most durable things in the world. It shouldn't be too hard the get out they kinda float in there on rubber "stars" that hold them in. Maybe try and get a little WD40 in there too. Wish I would have known, back when I sold my stock clip ons I would have taken them out for you...

Beau - my internal little "stars" were so seeded into the bars I could not get them out to save my ***! They were cheap from Ronnie's so I just ordered a new set. They are still in the parts bin but I plan to install them into the helibars.

I have had this bike for years. It was on there not that long ago. I just noticed it saturday that it was gone. I will look at the 'fiche right now and see what all broke. No the bolt didnt break off in there. The hole is open with the threads.

ok i have no idea what broke all off... lol at least the 17 bolt is gone and the big weight is gone. maybe just half of it? I think I will take apart the other side next week and see whats all there and go from there.

So maybe just the 17 bolt unscrewed itself with vibes and just fell off during a ride. The original threadlocking wasn't very good on one of my bar end bolts and it had once backed itself out about 1/4 way before I realized it.

Could have been tightened too much at some point... weakened the bolt... finally vibes, etc. had their way and one day it just falls off.

The bolt doesn't thread all the way through. Same thing happened when my VTR went down (note I said when IT went down, not when I went down).

Either broke from someone knocking it or stress crack from vibes or something. Either way you're looking at all new parts except the rubbers, but they're cheap so you may as well....

Maybe someone has an extra laying around???

So if you still have a threaded hole can you get the correct thread screw and screw it in tight and pull out the rest of the weight?

Yes, you can. Recommend some type of lubricant, a pair of Vice Grips, and someone to hold the bike so you don't pull it on its side!

Is the part that is "broken" the half circle metal part that the bar end fits into? Is this what Ali is describing as "sheered off"? If that is the case the bar end and screw are all that are needed to do the repair.

I got stock bar ends with screws. Let me know if you want them. I switched to stainless trying to settle the stock bars down shortly after buying the bike. Didn't work but that's another story.

Im not entirely sure what is broken. I havent had time to pull it apart. There is a huge car show this weekend and I am still getting the street rod in running order. Show starts tomorrow so I am crackalackin on that!
That surface you see around the threaded hole is rough, and obviously a metal fracture or break. Is the bar end threaded also? Like... the big slug part #7... is that threaded? If so, that and the bolt might be all I need. I have about a half inch of the grip that no longer has anything under it. That must have been where the bar end #7 flush mounted to the tube.

Oh, ****! It sounds like a piece of the bar end broke off or was broken and when the bar end loosened itself and became part of the road a small piece of the tube went with it. If that's the case then you need to replace the whole bar.

Unless I missed something (I probably did) you shouldn't need to change the whole bar that inner weight comes out...Once you see it it's a cylinder and it has a fatter end on it that the bar end butts up against and I think that's what broke off. Happened to me in the past...You should be able to get some oil in there, get a screw into the remaining threads and pull it out with some vise grips, and just replace that inner bar weight...I think it's just supposed to kill some of the vibes to your hands but it's not like you can't ride the bike w/o it. Like I said I wish I would have taken them out of the pair of clip ons I sold I would have given them to you

thanks sweety. I think I can do all that. I will be busy with the car show this weekend but next week I will tear it apart and probably hit up nuhawk for parts. Hopefully I just need the bar end and screw.
