thinking about parting out my hawk
Laid it down on the left side with minimal damage to the plastics......bike has 51000 miles and is a 1998 and red in color.....d and d pipes but u dont want the left one.....all other stuff is factory.....It has no other problems other than the clutch handle and shifter is bent.....I have tried to sell for
$2500 on craigs list but guess no one wants it......Willing to sell the whole thing but would probably make more if I parted it out! any suggestions on where to start? posted some pictures 2 of which are the damage pictures. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

tnperrys: You can probably repair the bike for less than $450. The left fairing new runs $225.00 and depending upon the damage to the left can, you can probably re-sleeve it. Contact D&D about a new sleeve. Members here can help you with acquiring the clutch lever and shifter.
Good luck.
Good luck.

Seems like at easy enough fix. Sadly a nice '98 with no damage with lower miles on it is only going to bring $2500-$3000. If it's completely stock w/ a 51k mile engine I don't know if it's worth the effort/aggravation of parting it out to possibly make a few hundred extra dollars. Though you'd probably spend the difference fixing it I think it would be easier to sell fixed. You might even want to keep it And D&D cans are pretty easy to come by on ebay.

look at it this way. you're not gonna get much for it. might as well fix it up and keep riding it until i does grenade something catastrophic at which point you can part it out. this leads me to believe that unless the CCT's fail you will ride it for a long time.
parting out also means you will have that money tied into a bike you cant ride. believe me i've parted out cars. a few select items go quickly but then it slows to a crawl and you have all these parts sitting around. anybody want a gas tank for an E34 BMW 5 series? LOL
i crashed my bike to the point that had i had full coverage insurance, they would have written it off, but since i didnt, and it was a single vehicle accident, i didnt even report it. parting it out would mean no bike next season. i invested a bit more money into it (call it cost of learning) and i have a fun, extremely unique bike.

I think parting out is alot better an idea for someone who has a shitload of money tied up in aftermarket parts-or at least selling all that stuff off first and selling the bike stock.

I would repair it and keep it. Just like my high mileage '98 VTR with 56,000 miles it ain't worth much dollar-wise but in terms of sentimental value and for old times sake it's worth a fortune to me. I love this bike.

Crap, my '05, bought in August of '05, has over 35,000 miles on it. I'm glad someone else has ridden theirs. I hear of guys buying a '98 with like 8,000 miles and go
So if you part it out, what are you going to replace it with?

In the 4 years I’ve owned it I’ve been deployed 27 months to Iraq, 8.5 months to training areas aray from home, and still racked up 21k miles since I bought her.
TO the OP.. Fix it and ride the SH if you like the bike,, Even with brand new parts it will be worth it. If you’re looking for a change, part it.. As has been mentioned in perfect condition that bike sells used for $2~2500. Fixing and sell is a quicker deal, but less return on investment. Parting is more return, but SLOW..

I'd just fix the lever and exhaust can and keep riding it. Looks like it's not THAT bad.
However, if you do decide to part it, I'd be interested in the tail section plastic. Is it still in reasonable shape?
