Unhappy The Superhawk is gone

Well, I finally had my first weck. My buddy and I were riding Cherahala Skyway Monday morning heading to the Gap just didnt quite make it there. Both of us were pushing it (80mph average). Got just over into N.C. and went wide entering a sweeping left hand turn at about 70. My speed pulled me to white line where I walked it till finally the front tire washed(did not touch the brakes but would have had the same effect). The hawk and I both tumbled in the ditch for about 120 feet till coming to a stop. Touched the ground to make sure I really did come to a stop, found that I had all my limbs and no breaks. I was wearing leather riding suit, boots, gloves and full face lid. Picked the bike up to find broken engine case and four quarts of fresh oil poured out of it. Friend rode back to Telico called one of his friends with a truck, rolled the bike in the back and took the drive of shame home. Wife was not too mad at me. Next day, I have never hurt that bad before in my life (lot of bruises) Got a quote back to repair the Hawk $9000. Ins will total it out. Now, I have no idea what bike I want next but not having one is the worst punishment of all. I have nobody to blame but myself. I have taken that turn faster many of times before with no problems. Chalk one up to stupidy.

I think we've all taken the drive of shame home (that's about the best name for it by the way) at least once, some of us more than once...I've also taken the ride of **** in an ambulance so as hard as it seems right now consider yourself lucky. Sorry about your bike but glad to hear you're going to be ok.

Glad you weren't seriously hurt... bikes can be replaced. Have fun picking out a replacement.

Glad you're ok and thank God there were no trees - at least you had a clean runout! As well, it sounds like you and the bike didn't have a secondary collision after the impact. This is good!

Sorry about the bike but yadayadayada! BTDT If the estimate is that high there's probably little left for salvage parts so you might just want part ways with this one. With my wreck they salvaged the bike to me for $260 but it was wearing about $5k in aftermarket parts so it was worth it. Once you're not so sore you can look it over better but if it tumbled - especially if it did one of those twisty-spiral-cartwheel things - nothing is straight anymore.

I know the ride of shame well. Mine didn't end up at my garage - it ended up at the jobsite I was to be at before the wreck. I had the wrecker-driver drop me at the site before taking the bike up to the dealership. Everybody just stood there looked at me and the bike strapped the back of the flatbed. I almost felt guilty to be alive. The road is narrow so after dropping me the wrecker driver pulled past the job a little and did a turn-around in the neighbor's drive. Everybody got a full 360 view.

"Good morning, Boss! Looks like you killed a good bike!"

Well, we gotta give you props on being all geared up. Sounds like it could've been way worse. Glad to hear you're alright.

So now that you've got some thinking to do, where have your thoughts been leading you? Stay with a twin? Keep on with something you can do a bit of touring with, if you like? Got your eye set on anything yet, or are you too clouded by the wreck still? It sounds like you're gonna be fine, so take your time and get the bike you want. And if you want another Superhawk, I'm not selling

Thanks for all the input,I just want payoff from the insurance company. Had the bike a little over a year, was a leftover 05, so I hope I am not too upsidedown on it. I love twins but I am going to be open-minded to all makes and brands. Today, took a friend of mine (wants to get a bike also) around to the local dealerships and looked at everything from the new CBR600 to a Speedtriple to all the GSXRs well except the 1000s. I have no idea what I want. The bike will be alot like the SH because it will have to do it all for a while such as trackdays trips in the mountains even Heaven forbid drives in the city. We all have done this before but if you were in my position what would you look for with about $7500 to spend? I am thinking of tring to find something one to two years old also. BTW the friend I rode with wants to buy the salvage hawk and try to make a Honda version of the Monster. So hopefully I will still get to help work on the Hawk; it just will not be my money spent on it. Kind of a win win because I will still get to ride it.

I have had my eye on the 750s for a while. Think it would be a great bike for everything but comfort but hey the Superhawk is not that comfortable either. The Speedtriple keeps calling my name and it would be great for everything but maybe trackdays and price. I will stick with a sportbike or a standard.

It may not be comfortable to ride all day, but I like the ergos and love the seat of the 750. And if you don't mind revving, you'll like the power delivery. I'm only 150, but that suspension felt like it was set up just for me. Aw man. That's helped me see the light that the Hawk needs a shock. I mean, I knew already from my *** getting pounded by the Hawk's seat over practically every single bump I ride over, but still, that 750 soaked everything in and still was firm and planted. This is an '06, I'm speaking of, btw.

Glad you are ok, sounds like th soreness and bruises i have after a weekend of hard woods riding.

The Skyway is damn tricky heading East. I much better prefer East to west. Lucky you didn't do 120 feet of that Guardrail of death up there on the Skyway. My girlfriend went down near where you did going the same direct, except she was taking a decreasing radius right turn and slide out. She was oh so lucky, she went under the guardrail and missed the 10x10 wooden poles holding the rail up. The bike didn't, totaled it.

The Skyway can bite you bad as you know, more riders crash and get hurt on the Skyway than any other rode in TN or NC including the Gap.,

As for your new bike thoughts, If i were looking i would strongly consider the late model Suzuki SV650S, damn sweet bike. That is what my girl friend crashed and what she bought again.

Hell of alot of fun bike, really lite weight, Fuel injected and they are tons of them out there on ebay and such. The SV is one of the hottest selling bikes, riders buy them and think they want to ride, then come to their scenses and decide to give up riding and sell them.

We spent 5k and got a fully loaded 2005 SV with all the accessories and only 2500 miles.

Very glad you are OK.

Ditto what Thumper said above.

I generally stay off the Cherohala Skyway unless I am just going to take it easy and cruise along. It is, IMO, not the place for aggressive riding, even though it begs for it.
Way too many places to have a bad encounter with a guardrail if you go down.

I have told my buddies:
If you crash Deal's Gap, you might break an arm or a leg.
If you crash on the Cherohala Skyway you might LOSE an arm or a leg. (or worse)

Regarding choice for a replacement - who knows???
There are soooo many choices these days.

Based on what you described as the needs, another SH would seem to fill the bill.
Maybe an SV 650?

Best of luck and again, glad you are no worse for wear than you are.

Glad you are still walking and talking.

Going down sure sucks. I just dumped my DRZ last week. It's fine, they crash really good. I was geared up with only slight rash.

Not to sound like a vulture, are you gonna keep the bike if the buy back is decent. I'm sure you could make back what you pay for it.

PM me if you are.

Man, sorry to hear about you and the S'Hawk. RIP for the bike. Super glad you're okay. The Cherahola is tons of fun. I like it more than the Gap, personally. It does beg to be ridden fast and I remember one particular decreasing radius right hander heading towards Robbinsville that almost bit me once.

Since we are riding that route on Saturday for the Rally I will lead the group with "The Pace". I have nice, bright flashing LED brake lights to give everyone plenty of warning on the tricky corners.

Most of us who own a VTR tend to like things that are "different" than everyone else. That's part of the reason we own them. I think you should go for either another VTR or maybe a D675. I like the look of the new Gixxers but damn, everyone's got one! That's not me. It's probably not you either.

Thanks again for all the input. I actually like to ride Cherahola better than Deals. It kinda weeds out the squids (like I can talk about squids now LOL). It doest look like I will be getting anything before the Superhawk meet but if I do you can count on me to be there. AS far as the SVs are concerned I feel they are great bikes that love to be rode hard and with mods they can be a force on the track. They just do nothing for me. Saw an SV650 and 1000 at the dealership yesterday both had good prices but didnt get that feeling I got with the Superhawk. You all know that feeling of "This is it! This is the bike I have to have! Just listen to that sound!!!" So far it is down to a CBR600RR,GSXR600,750 and the Speedtriple. Price is killing my hopes on the Triple.

Bike Suggestions

Hey Rooster, you know the Ninja 250 is quite the capable little do-it-all? (before you start bashing, I rode one for a while!).

Keep these vultures off my new Super hawk! And, if you don't get a ride by then, you can take my Gixxer to the Superhawk rally... as long as it isn't 4th of July weekend (before) because we're doing a couple track days at Mid-Ohio... There's your goal to get a new bike, by the way!

How 'bout an F4i? Comfy, fast, streetable, trackable.... and cheap... like, you could buy a nice one for cheap... We've been focusing too much on the new stuff. Get the right bike, and you'll have enough for a track bike too... or at least, a one-piece, stack of tires, and a few track dates!

Hell, I enjoyed tooling around on a Ninja 500 for a while...Fun and cheap, I would love to get another one, way fun in the twisties, without all that unnecessary power to get in the way...LOL

This is some kind of trusting friend to let me ride his bike after I just totaled my own bike. Insurance just called and basicly gave me $1000 more than I owed. I just new they were going to lowball me this is great Bad news, they will not let me buy back the bike. Something about the lender having ownership of the title. Sucks, now "Bus" can't throw money at the bike. I'm sure it will be in the hands of something like Verastar. Still love to talk about Superhawks and motorcycles in general. So you folks will not be getting rid of me that easily. This is a great board because everybody loves SHs but are also open to discussion of different bikes.

Sorry to hear about the crash. I vividly remember my ride home of shame on the back of my buddy's SV650. Worse was the month with no bike.

I'm surprised to hear all the suggestions for other (and completely different) bikes. What's wrong with another VTR? Am I missing something?

Well, I wanted to follow up with everyone an to say I found a new bike to replace the SuperHawk. I am now part of the ranks of all the squids across the US because I too own an 07 GSXR 600. I was very disappointed with all the salesman here in the Chattanooga area. It seemed no one wanted to "sell" me a bike. I would have to approach the salesman to even get a price on a bike. The worst of all was Triumph of Chattanooga. I love the Speed Triple and would have gave away most of my belongings to purchase it if the salesman just would have come off the price some. He tried to tell me that they get in trouble for knocking $500 off MSRP by Triumph Corporation (what a bunch of B.S.). They want $9900 for a Triple, way too much. The CBR600RR was a great price but I got an even better deal on the GSXR ( I know the CBR is better but not by much). The bike is about as comfortable as a SH. It doesn't have the low-end grunt of course but it pulls very smoothly and once you hit 8000 rpms hold on. What I do miss about the SuperHawk is its individuality. I pass myself at least twice everyday. On a good note there is about six times the amount of parts available. Oh yeah, after the accident I got $1000 more than I owed (depreciated $700 in one year, amazing) . Got the GSXR for less than I was willing to spend and my insurance is cheaper because I went with a 600cc instead of a 1000cc. My goal now is to get race plastic, frame sliders, swing arm sliders so when I do Track days there will be some protection. Of course, I wrecked on the street with the SH not on the track. I love this forum and will continue to visit and post on subjects I know nothing about. All I can say now is I have got to get me one of those mohawks for the hemet. Maybe start wearing some shorts, a tank top and flip-flops to ride in LOL. P.S. catching a lot of hell for wearing a Honda jacket while riding the Suzuki.

Thanks, it is black on matte black, post pics when I am smart enough to do it right. Right now, my biggest problem is trying to get my confidence back. I feel like I just started riding again. Of course, no engine braking makes me feel less confident about entering turns hot. No big twin slowing me down LOL. Got to get use to bike.

Screw 'em all! I wear a Triumph jacket and all I own are Hondas. I'm not a squid. I wear what I like and what fits. So should you.

Keep comin' back. You're not allowed to leave....kinda like Hotel California.
