The Superhawk doesnt make a good dirt bike

So, I went down for the first time this Sunday. I was riding with a few friends and my brother in the canyons and we decided to pull off the road onto a dirt path to park our bikes at the side of the mountain. As I'm going down this dirt path, I see this rock about the size of a softball directly in front of me. So I think to myself I should avoid this rock and move right....BAM next I know im laying down on my right side with the bike on my right foot. My little brother came and helped me pick it up off my foot as I look down and see oil all over the place because the clutch cover busted open

I was only going a little over 5 mph, but dam I had no time to react before the bike came out from beneath me. All I know is I'm going to invest in some frame sliders. I'd hate to see what would have happened if I was going faster.

I also had the first experience with the dealership robbing me. It cost me 30 bucks for the clutch cover gasket !!!!!!!!!!!. I can buy an entire gasket set for a small block Chevy for 50 bucks. Thats just insane.
Well I put some picks of the damage. I'm gonna be busy for the next few days and I'm never taking my hawk in the dirt again.

Yeah its pretty amazing how strong gravity is & how few miliseconds to the deck. If you came out unhurt its a cheap learning experience.

Yeah, like resident said, you need to get a little creative unless you are willing to spend alot of money for **** like a gasket. Sometimes you have to bite the bullet, but unless your OCD, you can often find other less costly solutions.

Talk about goin down fast, In my freakin driveway, I tried to run over a pressurized garden hose (on an angle to my direction) and was on the ground in a heartbeat. I must have had the front brake on or something weird when I tried to cross it cause it still seems impossible how fast i got horizontal.

I almost bought it on gravel, but I was on my Magna, not the SH. What a learning experience for me

perma tex from the auto store replaces the gasket quite well. I use it on all my bikes.

JB Weld is worth a try too.

the PO used JB weld on my cover before I got the bike. I've had it for 3yrs now with no signs of leakage or any other problems except that he did a crapy job of it lol

alteast it works. Some on before me tried to JB weld it.It looked about as bad as yours but had a layer of grey paint over it and leaked on top of that. I posted some picks of my JB weld and paint job. Its nothing great but alot better than what It was before.

I' havent had much luck with gasket makers before. I usually have to do the job twice because I get some small leak that just bugs me. I was thinking of ordering some gasket paper online and making my own, but I start school soon and want this done quick.

To those saying its not the bike, I know that. Just thought that would make a good headline and **** if my superhawk had front forks like the one posted above. I would have just ran over the rocks

You need to find a new dealership..... MSRP is only $24 for the gasket and you can get one from Ron Ayers for $17

Last time I took my cover off I used crankcase sealant in place of the gasket. I did the same thing on the stator cover. I figure if it's good enough for the case halves then it should be more than effective on the other less significant parts. I did it back in spring. No signs of any leaks yet.

Yeah I've been wanting to sand it down and smooth it out and repaint it too, but I have know idea how big the hole is and what else he added or left out. But you're right, it works for now so.

If you OCMD, then oiling the paper gaskets will get you access without tearing for the life of them. Just a trick that some of us know.

You sure you were going 5mph? That looks like at least 20mph. I'm pretty sure at 5mph I can stick my leg out and save it, not at 20 though.

Could you tell me the name of the stuff you used? I googled crankcase sealant and couldnt find many products.

Im sure I was going between 5-10 mph, wasn't watching the speedo just the road. Thats the thing it happened so fast I didn't have time to stick my leg out and save it. Like how nath981 above posted, It just seems impossible that the bike got sideways so fast for how fast I was going. The damage looks bad because it came to a stop on a bunch of rocks. The clutch cover was epoxied before so it broke easily. I thought the peg would be able to hold up to a fall at that speed, but I guess not. Also the only thing that happened to me was a small scrape on the palm of my hand. At 20 im sure I would be posting pics of how the rocks chewed up my leg.

Just felt like posting a few pics of my work in progress. Feels great to be back on the bike . Couldn't go too far because I'm still waiting for the rear set to come in the mail.

This whole time I've owned the bike my fuel petcock was only opened half way. When I first took the fuel tank off I was , didnt know if I turned the petcock left or right to shut it off. Did a quick search here and found out it was in the middle. Turned it all the way on and WOW what an improvement. The throttle is so much more responsive and it idles alot better. Feels like it has more power too, but maybe thats just form not riding for awhile.

Looks like I'm a little late based on the pics. But I used ThreeBond Liquid Gasket 1194. It's what the service guys at my local dealer recommended when I split my cases. Similar to other brands like HondaBond or YamaBond.

What did you end up going with?

I had already bought the gasket from the dealer when I posted that, but thanks I'll remember to look for that stuff next time I'm doing some engine work.

let's hope you don't have to find out the hard way, the way which results in no guessing relative to how fast you're on the ground. My SH has been down twice so far, once was over 90 and the other was in the driveway. Both times I was on the ground so fast there was no time for fear.

You're gonna have to stop visiting your parents. This is unacceptable behavior. hahaha

I like to reserve that for my XR, but I have indulged myself on the Red Bird, and, yeah, it's fun.
