Replacement keys
I am about to buy a 2000 superhawk and the owner can't find the keys. I will deduct my offer and want to figure out what my options are. The dealer said that the 2000 Superhawks dont have a number on the ignition where they can cut a key from a code? Is this the case as he was not 100% sure. I would hate to have to replace all the locks as that would be expensive. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

No way would I ever buy a bike with no keys. Forgetting the stolen part, how can you start is up to see how it runs? How can you take it around the block to see if the suspension or brakes are shot? No way...

I am getting a 2000 with 11k miles that had been sitting for 18 months under a tarp for $1400. Even if I had the key it would not start and I would not want to try without changing out the oil and coolant.

the owner should be able to get a key made with the lock cylinder code and proof of ownership at the dealer or a locksmith... I believe the ignition would have to be taken off the bike to see the code.

Call a locksmith out to his place and have them cut a key on the spot. Costs about $75.
Current owner can provide all necessary documents for the smith. Deduct the cost from the sale. If it is not what you want, split the cost with the owner and be glad you didn't buy it. Either way he needs a key to sell it.

Use the missing keys as price leverage. I get keys made from my local locksmith for $35... all they need is the ignition (sometimes they need the gas cap). Most of the time I give them the triple clamp and all because the have the special bits to remove the ignition switch bolts... no drilling for me! No, proof of ownership or any B.S. like that is needed at all. $1,400 for a 2000 is a good deal, jump on it. With only 11k miles on it, there can't be too much wrong with it.

Thanks for the info I will find out on Tuesday if she can get the title. If not I have a deal on a 1999 CBR 600 with 20K miles for $2500 that is in great shape. I do want the hawk though as I have never had a V-Twin and would like to tinker with it given it needs some work.

Haha, I was just looking at that same bike on craigslist the other day. I just went through a similar problem with a salvaged RC51 with no keys. I purchased a complete lockset for $160 from ronayers.com. In the meantime the dealer found THE key and sent it to me. I never installed the lockset so it sits on my desk. If the RC51 lockset will work in the 'Hawk I'll let it go for $100 if you can pick it up in Manassas. Let me know!

It does not look like it will pan out as they can't find the title. Dont people realize to sell a bike you need the keys and title. Don't list a bike if you don't at least have a title.

That's why I tend to stay away from DC and MD bikes. There's usually a sketchy story with bikes up there. Like an F4i I bought near Baltimore, never been down, great condition blah blah. Nail in front tire, (rear I wouldn't have cared) and it had in fact been down with some tell tale signs I knew from my previous F4i. Plus I got rear ended on the BWP on the way there. Then I went and looked at a Superhawk last year in MD that was wrecked, I thought it would be a good project bike- NOT! The only thing salvageable was the frame, ignition was drilled out, wheels bent, forks bent, plastic destroyed, shade tree mechanic undertail exhaust mod that burned all the wires up, but it did run. Wasted a trip with truck and trailer for that one.
Sorry to hear about your sour deal. There is another one in Stafford on craigslist for $2600, my friend is contemplating selling his in the $4-5K range, and there's the SSS 98 in Bristow for $6k. Oh and I think the SH I looked at in MD is still for sale after a year, it pops up from time to time, same price everytime, same misinformed ad with little info and a seller who is hard to get in contact with to boot.

I am not stuck on the SH just seemed like a very good deal and still is which is why I am staying around to see if the owner can find the title. As it has been sitting for 18 months and the owner is moving I do believe it is legit as she just does not know where the title and keys are and needs time to look. I just assume when someone sells a bike they would have this first? Anyways I did post pictures would like to know what you think. I really would like a CBR 600 or GSXR 750 but looking to only spend about $3000 there is not much out there in that range as the SH at $1400 and probably another $1000 into it would be a sweet bike. I will keep you posted.

Well, IMHO the Superhawk was the best motorcycle ever made. I have owned a couple F4i's (good but SH is still better), TL1000R, new VFR800, RC51, an HD, Victory, custom chopper, and a KLR. I love bikes, but the best all arounder has been the Superhawk. Comfort, streetable power, trackable power, amazing sound, great power, and more smiles per mile than any other bike. They are cheap, available, and easy to ride. Sexy too. Sounds like a good woman huh? I suppose living in Arlington your 'Hawk will be restricted to commuting in town with some weekend excursions to the countryside? A SV650 would be an excellent choice as well, a small bike with lots of character that you will struggle to out ride and cheap.

Right decision. Since she said I hasn't run in 18 months, it could be a situation where a boyfriend or whatever split and she's doing clean-up.
I know a woman who did that with a Harley 20 years ago. She said "Screw it, I cosigned for it anyway".

Who knows the bike is now worthless without a title. She said she will sell it to a friend who is a mechanic who will file for some sort of repo title where if you took your bike to shop and never paid the bill the shop can file paperwork and get the bike. This is what she said she will do and am sure she will get about $500. Too bad as it was a really good deal.

They should be able to get a replacement title easily enough... There are also places and states that will title a vehicle with just the bill of sale and insurance (of course I would have the police run the vin to be sure its not stolen) ... I was heading down that road with an old FZR basket case I bought years back but they did eventually find the tilte.
