please help! want my Hawk healthy! :(

ok guys....

i checked for air leaks in exhaust, none. ....

i am the carb ninja at jetting now so it aint that....

i getting a constant pop pop pop pop pop coming from teh muffler 4k and below on decel.

but its not a backfire.... more like a puff puff puff.. but if i give it the slightest bit of throttle while on decel... it goes away.

it also goes away when i pull the choke open while decelling... but thats cus my idle is now raised when doing that and so much gas comin in.

this pair sytem thing is worrying me... its all out, jb welded the reeds shut and capped the ends off at the cyl heads,
and plugged up THE PAIR HOSE HOLES THAT LEAD TO THE AIR BOX ONLY!
now, i have a k&n air filter, and it came with block of rubber ***** and i installed them.... but what EXACTLY should i be blocking off on the air box. the ONLY 4 hoses connected to the box are the air hose and breather hose in the front left and the air hose and breather hose in the lower right corner of the box SEE 5-4 IN SERVICE MANUAL and page 91 of the .PDF manual file ..... should i be BLOCKING THEM OFF TOO ? ?

dont get me wrong guys, i did the reading. it says to pull out pair, remove hoses and block off all ports to air box. . . well i only did the ones from pair and plugged up the little 1/4" vaccuum line too from the pair controller. i think the block off plates from k&n are plugging up the air hose or breather hose currently.

im not too rich or lean, and no leaks whatsoever in my MIG exhaust(went over it with a feather to check ) .... so its gonna be by the airbox . please help... thanks guys !

I would guess that your exhaust system is causing a lean condition on closed throttle decel. Increasing the pilot jet size fixed it on mine.
I believe the stock size is #43. I went to #45.

ill look into that.

HERES AN UPDATE:

just opened the airbox and removed those rubber block plates from K&N that came with filter(which i read somewhere not to use them) , went ridin, and same problem. wanted to do things one at a time anyways.....

this is also whati noticed. my idle stays in between 1100 and 1250 all the time... but i noticed as i was listening for any more leaks an hour ago....

theres a coughing or spitting at idle when im off the bike coming from mufflers.....

LIKE IF I PUT MY HANDS 5" FROM THE ENDS OF THE MUFFLERS, THERES LUKE WARM AIR AND THEN EVERY 5 SECONDS A LARGE SHARP POOF! COMES OUT THAT MAKES A CLAP NOISE ON MY HAND. . . IS THAT A SYMPTOM I NEED MY CARBS SYNCHED TOO?

Stock Pilots are actually 45's. The Factory Pro kit comes with 50's for Pilots.

I have found that the 48 pilots run best in the VTR with my Jardine High Mount Exhaust system and K&N Filter.

Sounds to me as if you are running lean on the off throttle circuit which will cause a backfire or popping sound.

Oh by the way i have the pair system removed and TBR plugs in place and air box plugged off just as you described.

The K&N filter is giving you a lot more air flow and will require more fuel on the pilot circuit.

hmmm, i guess i can just buy a pair of 48's at the honda dealer. funny how ive only heard this mentioned like 3 times on this site. . .. adjusting the idle jet that is. i mean my pipes are very loud and open so this makes sense. how much are these things gonna cost? like 5$ each ?

btw, if i adjust the air mix screws from 2 out to 3 out, it makes no difference.

Definitely running lean. Have the dealership sync your carbs correctly. 2 turns out or 3 turns out doesn't cut it. You need a pressure guage to be exact and 1/8th a turn makes a big difference.

Mike, what i meant was i went from 2 to 3 turns out in 1/4 turn increments.... with no difference on the pop pop op pop on every warmed-up decel. any other suggestions? my needles are out to 6th ring cus i had some stumbling on the 5th ring at 3k. 185/190 used. plugs a lil white. thats weird how i still need more fuel with max settings on dynojetkit.... guess i just need the 48 idle jet eh? if that dont work, use 50 and get it dynoed?

those dyno places on the dynojet site that SAY they do it for free with our free coupon are full of it. all 3 of the places i called yesterday want you to do this and that and one of those is free of the package. no 'get it basic and done for free' . hah

by the way.... where do i get an aftermarket pilot jet? i called dealership.. obviously no OEM 48 or 50 , but their afermarket was 24$ for size 48 and 15$ for 50. kinda weird the 50 is less $$ . anyways,, itll take 5 business days, so i was curious what kind of carbs we have, and wheres a good place online.

i think we got CV carbs(generic name for cont velocity?)

thanks again

I thought I might have the sizes wrong. #48 pilots are what I put in. I ordered factory Keihin jets from the Honda dealer.

CV stands for Constant Velocity. The slider keeps the velocity apprximately constant. The needle increases fuel according to slider position for accurate mixture control.

Well i guess your relationship with your local dealer is not as good as mine. My local dealer gives me a good discount and will pre-order parts for me over the phone and i pay when i pickup.

I don't know why so many people have had issues with the way the bike runs with a K&N in. I've had mine in since the first week I bought it and have had no problems at all. Factory jet kit set to the instructions, never had to dick with it.

well, got it workin, al i did was sprayed the carb
boots with wd40 and caught a leak. no more popping. ill pop in the new 48 pilot to see if it runs smoother too

anyways.

i did notice though if i open the hell out of the throttle to full open in second gear at like 2k rpm's like a roll on, it kinda stumles for about 1/2 a second then pulls hard. i would never want to open throttle this low of rms in 2nd gear but curious if it sounds like lean or rich on main jets? maybe rich.. i have k&n and 6th ring 2.5 out and 185/190 . every other circuit is great

Be sure that the pair seals are not cracked or leaking,I had what sounds
like the same problem when I removed the pairs and added block off plates,
A thin layer of rtv around the seals did the trick for me.
