Overpriced '98 or Under loved?

Thrilled to be a new member. Thank you to all the posters that have made this my favorite forum to visit lately. Long time VFR owner, but have drooled over the VTR for over a decade. I found a 98 with 7,700 miles in great cosmetic condition, all stock from I can tell, with original CCT’s listed at a dealer for just under $5K. Book value is obviously much less, but I am having a hard time finding one with similar mileage to gauge value with. I would likely put on 1k of additional mileage each year with no intention of reselling. As much as I love the idea of low mileage and a post-purchase tune-up, I have never purchased a cycle this long in the tooth to begin with. Grab it while I can, or let it pass? Thanks for your time!

Hard to value the worth of a bike to someone else in another area.. what's that saying.. "it's worth is whatever someone is willing to pay"??

Me.. $5k is more then I'm willing to pay for a SH.. But in the way silly things work, because I have a connection to another long in the tooth bike, the 1984-85 RZ350... I would pay more then most would say it's worth....for the right bike..

If the SH speaks to you, and it is in verifiable condition you think it is... then $5k is not wholly unreasonable for a perfect condition bike like that.

Frankly I'd pass at anything over @ $3000. I wouldn't dwell on the mileage there are members pushing 100K! Thereare also SH's out there for less than $2000, I paid $1500 for mine but there was a member not too long ago that got one under $1000, granted it had been sitting and needed some attention but not much! If you do a search you'll find more posts.

Bought my 2000 privately 2 years ago with less mileage than that, for less than $3000 Canadian. I say overpriced.

Great points and I really appreciate the input. I've waited this long. I'll just keep my eyes open and if need be, catch a weary salesperson in the off-season. Thanks again.

Why pay all that if you will ride only 1k per year? Why get a bike at all?

I have a '08 VFR that carries the brunt of my miles and living in WNY makes you appreciate quality over quantity. What I wouldn't give to accumulate the miles others are fortunate to see. Perhaps when the kids are older.

Dude, enjoy the VFR it's a great bike. When you can pick up a VTR you'll be amazed at the torque and probably mothball the VFR!

Outside of us Superhawk junkies yeah they're a little underloved, but 5k isn't a serious selling price unless they're just fishing for (sorry) an idiot. I can see if someone HAS to have one paying say $6500 for one that was found still in a crate, but there's absolutely no reason to pay that much for that bike. I bought a mint '99 with 8k miles and some aftermarket parts for $2100, and paid $1000 for a complete decent shape '98 that only needed the standard tlc after sitting for quite some time. If that bike were mine I couldn't imagine anyone giving me more than $3k for it.

I just picked up my 2000 in near mint shape with 27K on odo for $2900 privatley. Most dealers around here are looking for $4-5K for them as well. Overpriced IMO.

Skyrun, thats too much. Hey Whales? I was raised in Hamburg, my dad used to live on Bleistien in Colden.

That way overpriced. Considering your location, you should wided where you look. I am always shocked how much they charge for bikes in the snowbelt. Its like they are gold.

I drove to VA to get my last bike. (granted, it was a one of a kind). But a day trip is gonna save you like $2500 on a 98 vtr.

Look in Rochester, Syracuse, PA, etc. My cousin just drove down from Boston (NY) to right near me in NJ for a good deal. Just drive your pick-em-up truck or borrow your nieghbors, since the keys are probly in it.

Good luck. But for that kind of money it should have CBR forks, ohlins shock, racetech revalved forks, new everything, etc. (and even then its iffy)

I just paid $2600 for a 98 with 9700 miles in excellent condition with Two Brothers carbon high mount cans, Galfer steel braided brake lines . I got a solid deal .... I watch Craigs List and Ebay for my area alot.

The beauty of these VTR's being undervalued is you can pick one up for a steal ! They are superb motorcycles and are probably the best value on the market today for a solid sport bike. I love mine and really intend to keep it for some time. I have owned or ridden many bikes in my 35 years of riding, and the VTR is one of the best.

VFR's are another at the top of my list......

My 2 cents with bikes like this priced like this floating around there's really no reason to pay more for anything other than a sick, properly built custom or a brand new one in the crate.

The dealer has maybe $1500 in the bike and is using it to sell new ones. So he puts a ridiculous price on it to demonstrate that "hey, for only $3000 more you can get a brand new bike". It's a sales technique that works.

Way too much!!!! got my 98 for 1200.00 and that was 3 years ago. Granted it had been sitting in a garage for a year untouched but with a new battery, chain, fluids and some carb cleaning it fired right up and it I rode it 1800 miles to Denver. Now it has 45K on it. Keep hunting you can do better.

Also just a quick heads up.. make sure you change out the cam chain tensioners on it btwn 20k and 30k... I found out the hard way the hydraulic tensioners go bad and can cause a catastrophic failure in the engine... in my case it sucked an intake valve into the front cylinder and locked up the engine wedging the valve head sideways into the top of the piston and thrashed the head. Not fun.
