Re: OK What type of Motor Oil are you using ?
Stick with the honda HP4 10W40 in the gold bottle (without moly). I've used mobil 1 MX4T and it's slippery stuff but the thing about fully synthetic oils is that they tend to be less viscous (thick) although they are still rated 10 winter 40... this is because they offer the same "protection" as a 40 weight at operating temperature, but not the same viscosity. Why is this important?... well, cause those little valves go *tickey* *tickey* with thin oil and drive me freakin crazy! The gearbox also likes a little thicker oil for a smoother gear transition. I would difinitely avoid any car oils because they, such as Mobil and Castrol, contain "moly" which is a friction modifier... good for rings, bad for wet clutches.. they go slippey slippey. there was a great article in cycle world in like... um... august '03 that reviewed many popular motorcycles oils and even had friction ball tests to show wear and gave numbers on additives so you can chose what oil is best for your riding style... yeah, that's all.

Re: OK What type of Motor Oil are you using ?
I've been on quite a few boards/lists over the past nearly 10 years and this oil question is the end all/be all of never ending threads. It's nearly religious!
In the VFR world, there's a guy who happens to live just up the road from me (in Texas terms anyway) who analyzes oils/breakdowns for a living. I went searching for his advice but unfortunately the real nuggets in the archives were lost. I did find these two quotes from another thread that I think will suffice. Hope it makes sense. ScootR is the oil guy's name.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
I won't presume to speak for ScootR :bow: but I will toss in what I have learned from him in this thread (besides his ribbing on my obsessive oil level checks )
What oil to use is basically a personal decision based on many factors: cost, your budget, your time, your definition of "best protection", etc... For me, it's Chevron DELO 400 HD Diesel oil in 15W-40. $6.42 for a gallon at Walmart. This decision was based on lengthy discussions with ScootR and his feedback backed up with actual data. The DELO performs as well or even better in some cases as the so-called synthetics, though they have their advantages, too. I have nothing against Mobil 1 syns-I have learned that they (15W and higher) are great oils, but the DELO protects as well for a fraction of the cost. I change the oil every 3K miles whether I am running synthetic or dino, so the cost is a factor.
Again, it is entirely up to you. If you really want to go synthetic, the Mobil 1 15W-50 red cap is a great oil, and the Mobil 1 20W-50 is even better according to oil analysis. The cold pour point on both is fine for temps down somewhere below 0, so it should cover you for at least half the year there (I'm in Texas so all year for me).
ScootR-let me know if I have stepped on your toes here...
And here's ScootR's short reply:
Damn ! You guys are good :bow: 60 degrees at nite ain't cold even for a monograde oil. Read your owners manual, the vis chart vs ambient temp is accurate. I won't use lower than a 15W and prefer 50 grades on the upper end. So for me it's 15W-50 or 20W-50's. The 15W-40 HD diesel oils are very good too, I know, I tested them all at work. The 5W-40 HD oils are also good, the syns anyways but I will say they are not as good w.r.t. valvetrain wear as the 15W-40's and the best I've seen to date were a couple pf 20W-50's.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
End of thread. Can of worms opened, running for cover...........

Aunt Gemimas fully synthetic: me three no "slippage". i personally think that oil companies are trying to rip us off with this oil research mumbo jumbo. i mean come on, anti-foaming agents, friction modiwhaters? it's all dinsoaur juice. and washing with soap? Maw says that's fer the whippersnappers!

try to clutch up a wheelie in second gear with stock gearing and mobil 1 fully synthetic. if you can (sitting down) then i stand corrected and will gladly admit that i was wrong. this wheelie was not clutched up tho.

Re: OK What type of Motor Oil are you using ?
Mobil now makes their Supersyn in a 10w-40 and it's call Extended Peformance .
I think it will do well in non race conditions and is 23 bucks for a 5quart jug @ Walmarts . They have a 15w-50 version also . It's the same as the red cap 15w-50 but with more boron and calcium n stuff .
I'm not switching from Synergyn and Maxima though . I buy those two at about the same price .

Re: OK What type of Motor Oil are you using ?
This si what i went with today.
I have nothing against honda but they make good cars and bikes, where as valvoline almost exsclusively makes oil. So in my mind i think they make a better oil. They say they have done a bunch of research with the clutches and motors of all 4 stroke cycles.
the best
What do you guys think, i think it is the best.

I usually use Motul but my dealer was out, so I am trying the Honda Hi Perf. GN 40. I put about 80 miles on sunday, seemed ok. I was surprised when I put the oil in though, It wasn't light golden as most oil is when new. It was darker, more copper colored. We'll see how it holds up.
