New toy in the stable
my girl and i picked up a mint 04 R1 last week and figured some pics are in order cause we all like pics!
i've only got about 100 miles on the r1 so far but i like the hawk quite a bit more on the street(as i'm sure everyone here could have guessed). i rode them back to back for the first time tonight and the hawk is a lot more comfortable, especially with the bar risers on her. feels like riding an enduro compared to the r1. the hawk also turns in quicker but i think that might have something to do with the current state of the tires on both bikes. brakes on the r1 are nice. radial mount calipers and brembo master are sweet and it stops with better feel than my gsxr modded brake system on the hawk. the r1 also has a lot more mid range and bottom end than you would expect after reading all the reviews.way more than enough for the street... and the top end is just stupid. after riding a hawk for 4 years, i'm rarely impressed with the sound of any I4 but i have to say i love the intake sound on the r1. it's been pretty easy to work on too... at least so far.

Sweet! The R1's are such beautiful bikes. The top end horsepower and brakes are unreal on the new liter bikes. I'd get off my ZX12 and onto the superhawk and it felt like was riding a sportster when I hit the throttle. BUT the superhawks are still in the garage
and the kawi got sold (sniff sniff I still miss her though)

...and my hawk isn't going anywhere either!
LOL, the lawnmover has some nice wheels too!
R1 would nice. Buddy of mine has one just like it but has converted it to a track only bike now. I've always liked them. Very sexy looking bikes. Probably the only Yami sportbike I'd own.

how much did you end up getting it for?
Well it looks like flooding the market with cheap bikes is finally cutting into Yamaha.
You got a great deal on the bike.
The one thing that I have never liked about Yamaha's sportbikes is the snakey-crazy power curve.
I guess that makes me old-fashioned but when it's done pushin' - it's time to shift. That's one of the most important attributes that brought me to the Superhawk to begin with.
I've always looked for a machine that was dynamic in a number of driving situations and the v-twins and the v-fours do it for me. Just my o2 so be careful out there.

I stepped off of a 97 cbr900 rr and had the exact same impression as you. The hawk does feel like a long legged supermotard compared to a racer replica. My hawk scared me with the ease of turn in over the Fireblade also.
But thats a good looking scooter friend, you will really enjoy it. On a different level.

yeah it does have an odd power band and you can notice that dip around 6-7k rpm. but it really something else to experience the kind of acceleration these newer bikes have. once it's past the dip, the surge toward the redline is quite impressive.
and yeah i am enjoying it... especially for someone who never really cared to own a Yamaha
