New Superhawk owner a fixer upper

Hi all,
I just bought a 2000 Superhawk with 11K miles. The bike is a fixer upper as it has been sitting under a tarp for about 18 months. I got this for $1200 and at the least have to replace the tires, chain, all fluids, battery, and who knows what else till I get into the bike. I looked at the rotors and am not sure if I should just clean them off as they are a bit rusted or replace them. I looked online and rotors are very expensive. I would like to limit myself to about $1000 to put into the bike.

I have been doing research in terms of prices but would love some suggestions on where to look for my items. I wonder if I replace the chain should I go ahead and replace front and rear sprockets as well? I think I would get a 530 102 link chain and think the stock sprockets are 16 front and 41 rear.

I will be here often looking for help and suggestions and will be picking up the bike next week as the owner has to hunt down the title and keys.

Welcome aboard! Cool, I love projects. I also am finishing one up as well. I bought it after the previous owner crashed it. Ended up needing basically ALOT of cleaning and cosmetics. Runs like a champ for cheap. I'm an ebay junkie, these bikes still get parted out all the time on there and stock parts often go for pretty cheap. This is also a good resourse with lots of good folks. Don't be afraid to throw up a parts wanted post and often you'll get help here. Tough to say about what needs to be replaced on yours without seeing it. Often a good cleaning can bring alot of stuff back to life. Too bad it sounds like it sat outside, the elements can take their toll. Good luck!

I would ride it carefully and use the brakes to scrub the rotors then look at them after that.

You should check to see what R/R you have, if it has no fins I'd replace it with a ebay R6/R1 or GSXR unit.

Is the current chain bad? It may clean up.. If you must replace it, there are kits on ebay with chain and sprockets for cheapish.

Consider the CCT's just for peace of mind, I have yet to do mine though so I shouldn't preach.. lol

Good luck!

Well, i too have bought a fixer upper a couple months ago....I had to Replace the tires, new grips, new bar ends( one missing), new chain, new rear wheel bearings, had the counter shaft oil seal replaced, it was leaking.. Brake pads rotor and battery were ok.. I had to clean up alot of oil from leaky countershaft seal.. I also had i small hole in edge of seat which i sewed.. I changed the fluids and waxed her up ..

I would pay attention to your wheel bearings, you should not have any wobble at the axle. bearings are 16 bucks for a set per wheel,my seal was 11 bucks..im sure you know tires can be pricey. Cam chain tensioners are about 23 bucks ,not too bad if you need them..buy a good chain not a 50 dollar chain.. spend 100 or so if you need it.. you shouldnt have any frozen links in it..

i think a grand should put the bike on the road but you want to do some of the stuff yourself, most shops will eat a a few hundred bucks fast for stuff you can do youself... i didnt have the tools for the chain, it cannot be a master link chain per manual, nor did i have the correct tools for the bearings or the oil seal..or the tires really..

you are correct about stock sprocket and chain, i would recommend Michellin Pilot tires 180 series on the rear..

alot of people on this site have changed the sprockets to a 15 and ? i cant remeber exactly but they seem to love it..you can find it in multiple posts..

send some pics ?

all fluids are easy to do and should be swapped out in your case (this will save some cash) - brakes, clutch, oil, coolant, gas (check for rust inside the tank)

definitely check the bearings

post up some pics, we like to see new bikes around here

The deal might fall through as the owner cant find the title or keys. I hate dealing with stupid people don't people know they have to have a title to sell a bike?

I feel your pain, alot of us have been there before. Without the even longer version of the story I bought a bike off ebay advertised as clean title and told straight up by the owner clean title. Payed thru paypal cause it was cheap and as I'm getting ready to load it up (rented a trailer and everything) he can't find the title all of a sudden. Then I try to be as flexible as possible and he proceeds to give me every excuse under the sun why he doesn't have time to look for it before he moves across the country, but promises to mail it to me (?!) I said why not let me take the bike and I'll pay YOU when I get the title in the mail ********? Needless to say I didn't go alone and we escorted him to an ATM and he gave me my money back Cool bike though, very clean '74 cb550 for $350...it was really hard to let it go. But if this one doesn't work out for you there will be others. I picked my project '99 off here crashed for $1k. Put new brake rotors on it, sold all the crashed bodywork, hugger, the jardines and I have a perfect running superhawk for a couple hundred bucks! I LOVE projects Alot of love later I'll have a near mint yellow '99 for maybe $1200 or $1500.
