New to site and vtrs!
Hi! i just joined this forum because i just bought a 02 VTR 1000, it is damaged with a salvage title - the damage seems only cosmetic - rashed tank, cracked right fairings, mirrors and wind screen.
i have only seen it from the auction pics and i do not know the milage, it cost me 1300, i know that its not very cheap but i think its somewhat reasonable.
i plan on repairing it asap
so anyways, sup

Thanks Hawk! thanks for all the welcomes! i will get the bike in tomorrow and ill put some pics up, its going to be a mess but i think it will be a fun project!
i was wondering if the carbs were ever problematic on these bikes - i know honda carbs are usually well made but i still prefer EFI
i have never actually ridden a super hawk, i rhode an SV1000 for a decent amount of time and i really like v-twins - im pretty sure the sv has some more power but it seems like the SH has plenty

While on paper the VTR and the SV thou are very similar, they actually feel very different.
Yes, they both have 90 degree liter twins and have similar dyno curves, but the FI of the SV gives a totally different feel at part throttle and is twitchy in transitions. Honestly, the VTR is the smoother motor. Maybe the SV can be smoothed out with a power commander and some good mapping work.
The SVs riding position is much more aggressive than the VTR with lower clip ons, a shorter tank and higher footpegs. The SV is much more of a contemporary sportbike.
The SV suspension is better than the VTR hands down, as are the brakes.
I really like the SV650 and expected to love the thou. But I didn't. I preferred the VTR.
The SVthou is likely a much better track / speedcrime bike. The VTR is (IMO) just easier and more fun to ride at normal speeds.

thats good to know, i rhode a lot of my friends' inlin 4 bikes and i just prefer the torque of twins. i am not a crazy driver, i dont plan on racing it and i didnt buy the bike to look cool or impress chicks
i have never even sat on a VTR so i dont know but the the SV fit me very well - im 6'3, weigh about 220 - especially compared to other sport bikes
a close friend of mine has a buell lightning and that bike is fun as hell, a little too small for me (i look kinda goofy on it) but nice torque and fun to throw around

I test rode an SV1k a few months ago and my impressions are almost the opposite of yours......except for the suspension which felt beter than my 10 year old Hawk, I thought the riding position felt more relaxed, footpegs lower, etc. and the brakes didn't feel very powerful (maybe because it was the first ride for this bike)...

Welcome Veles!
I've got an '02 Hawk too and paid a lot more than $1300 for it!
I think you'll be very pleased with the carbs. Mine were re-jetted with the addition of my after-market pipes and work great...smooth.......
Also, I have a friend with a Buell 1200 too and I have to take it easy on him

i was looking through some members pics (awesome bikes) and i realise that i REALLY need an aftermarket bellypan, who makes them and about how much are they?

UPDATE: got the bike in, no pics yet but this is the damage - turns out the forks are bent pretty well and im going to need to replace them.
left fairing is cracked but repairable - i may replace it if i find a decnet one for cheap
front light is intact but the windscreen and the rear view mirrors are broken
tank is dented but again repairable
so if ayone has unbent front forks that they would like to seel please let me know
thanks again for the welcome

Hey Veles,
you are in luck I have a straight set of forks in my garage with the triples, clip-ons, front fender, left fairing with light scratch from a tip over, front wheel, calipers.
And the best part is that I live less than 50 miles from you in Vacaville! So we will not have to ship anything. Also the forks have 90kg racetech front springs and gold valves already installed!
Later Dennis!

heh tell me about it!
its basically the whole front end, i too it all apart now and the frame is straight with no serious damage (except the forks and the left peg), just a lot of cracked plastic!
i dont have a key for it yet so i havent started it and i cant wait to hear the v-twin sound
