I'll be the first to say it ...... buy some aftermarket CCTs (camshaft chain tensioners) and put 'em in (see the Knowledge Base for step-by-step)

Welcome and enjoy the bike!

The "squid" label on your profile is solely based on the number of posts you have made. I don't know the number at which it changes, but it will.

Welcome.

You can get the CCTs here on the board from our member Trucinduc. He manufactures and sells them.

1998-2000 are identical, as are 2001-2005

(there were a few 97's and 06's but not many)

Actually if you count the European bikes (which you 'mericans usually forget...) , I'm pretty sure there are more 97's than any other year... 98 being second... And then there is even 07's as well (really they are 06's but registered by Honda as early 07 in a big batch just before regulations changed...)

APE is the commercial provider for aftermarket adjusters. Reports about the OEM CCTs' longevity vary - mine went out at about 30K. It's better to get it out of the way than to have them fail. Though they do give some sound/noise indication that they're going south.

I would give Trucinduc some time to heal up before I ordered from him.. He makes the better product at a cheaper price, but right now he is overwhelmed with his injury and related things.

So if you need them now, get APEs. If you can wait for Truck, then wait.

Truck`s are $95 USD shipped to Canada and include the gaskets and a sealant on the threads. APE`s are at least $100 USD (or more) plus shipping and do not come with gaskets (someone correct me if I'm wrong) or sealed threads (resulting in a slight oil seepage over time). Plus, Truck can ship as a gift, so no import duties.

I believe the APE's do retail for $100, plus a couple bucks for each gasket. The APE's I installed have shown NO SIGNS of leakage at all. I remember reading somewhere here that the early models may develop leaks, but that the newer ones come with o rings to prevent leakage.

not to dispute stuff, but my APE's were $80 shipped. and they haven't started leaking yet. this is the 3rd season I've had them. that said, I still think more time and care go into the ones truck makes. if money was no object, I'd pick his. but he wasn't making them yet when I got the APE's.

You folks live in the US so shipping costs are minimal (you wouldn,t beleive how many eBay sellers literally rip you off on cross-border shipping: case in point one chap wanted $25 to ship me a braided clutch line (I had previously gotten got a complete set of forks sent here for only $50...) I ended up buying the line from a chap in the UK, I paid $6 more for the line but saved $20 in shipping) and duties are a non-issue. For those of us living in Canada, however, this is not the case and those factors alone make Truck`s a good deal.

I think my 05 model is the only one year that came with a different tack and speedo instruments.
With the clock and fuel guage.

Just thought I'd add that yes the APEs can leak oil. My rear one seeps small amounts. They've been on there for only two seasons. It's not a big deal. Just wipe it off from time to time. And it's not nearly enough to notice any change in oil level.
