Needle bearing for the shifter

Hey folks,

I recently installed my new Jamie D CNC-machined shifter (very nice). After playing around with it a bit, I decided to go whole hog and have it machined to use a needle bearing (instead of a bushing) for smoother action and virtually zero play. After doing a bit of research, I decided to order an NTN NK 12/16 machined ring needle bearing (19mm outer race diameter, 12 mm inner diameter, 16 mm wide). I will have the pivot bolt machined down to 12 mm (from standard 15 mm) and the shifter hole bored out slightly to allow an interference fit to have the bearing pressed in.

I realize that this is totally unnecessary but what the hell, if I'm gonna do the job, may as well do it right (maybe follow up with a Factory Pro shift kit when I have engine out for a rebuild (hi-com pistons), hopefully next year).

cheers

I did it and it makes a big difference. I used the bearings out of roller blades just had to mill the OD on the rearsets a little. Don’t remember the numbers but it did not take long. Well worth it.

is the pivot shaft on the brake side the same diameter as the pivot bolt for the shifter (ie. 15 mm)?

I have no clue. I built my rearsets from scratch. Im building my own shift lever that connects directly to the shifter fork shaft, Ie GP shift, no linkage.

gotcha! I'll have a look at home tonight, maybe I can recycle the bushing from my new shift lever there.

Check mitsumi to see if they have a shoulder bolt that is already sized for what you need.

I just got a hold of the chap who welded the brace to my swingarm and he'll take care of the machining (basic stuff). He'll also press in the bearing. I can't wait to get this all bolted up. Should make for some nice shifting (will likely move the linkage to the short-throw position). Will keep you posted.

cheers

P.S. I just ordered up a set of "Click N Roll" levers (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Click...4001QQtcZphoto) for the bike....

Finally picked up the new shifter and installed it. Wow! No play at all (either lateral or fore and aft). Shifts are smoother and lighter now. May look at the Factory Pro tranny stuff when I get it rebuilt to finish off the package but for now it is a big step up from stock
