This isn't your typical exhaust question, so put your thinking caps on.

I have a WBO2 sensor (Wide Band O2 ..... wideband) that I want to use to play around with on my VTR. I want to install the sensor in three different locations. I want one mount for each individual cylinder, then a third that is shared. I would use the individual mounts to monitor differences between each cylinder and the shared one should be self-explanatory.

What I want/need to know is if the junction area around where the front and rear pipes meet is safe to drill and weld the bungs that are needed to do this. Are the tubes in this area double wall or single?

Of course if I was really smart I would have taken a picture and edited it with locations to show wtf i'm talking about, but it's late, i'm tired and ..... yeah, pics tomorrow.


PATIA for all/any info and guidance y'all can provide before I start drilling and welding.

I'm not the big tech guru on this site, but I would say there would be no issue w/ what you want to do, as long as there are no leaks (welds and threads good and solid..). I'd also say watch flow restrictions. I'd like to know how/what you're doing works out..

 

A couple of years ago I took my VTR in for a dyno run. The tech wanted to use an exhaust gas analyzer sensor but he couldn’t get the probe down the stock muffler. He drilled or cut a hole in the exhaust in the area fed by both cylinders. The pipe there is single wall. When he was done, he brazed the piece he cut back on. It hasn’t caused any problems. Sorry I can't tell you what kind of sensor he used.

 

Take the muffler off and you'll be able to see it better. There is one part where it isn't quite a double-wall but there is a bit of an "extension"
