My new ride

First, wanted to say hi to all of you out there.
Been browsing this forum, and its helped me out.

Anyways, just picked up a 98 last night.
The ride home was awsome... except that I lost the gagues... My first guess is that the battery is so dead that the gagues are not working. I hope that once I pick up a new battery, it should work (I HOPE!).
Definitely can get into a lot of trouble...

Hmmm... hope I did this right, and that the pics will be displayed.
tdk.

Before the gauges went dead did you see the tach jumping around at all?

It could be that you're Regulator/Rectifier has gone out. It's a fairly common issue.

Congrats on the new bike though, looks great!

Willie,
Of course! Red is ALWAYS faster. My Saab is also red, just for the same reason.

When I parked it and put the stand down, I noticed the odometer come back on (momentarily). The Speedo jumped around, but the tach did nothing.
Temp gauge was working though.
The turn signals also were flashing at inconsistant speeds (indicators on the instrument cluster did not show the signals to be working.)

any thoughts?

thanks

R/R !! sounds like the dreaded regulator rectifier issue. lots of info on it here but if you don't care about price, just get the newer one for the hawk. the one with heat fins. just did mine about a month ago.

That's what mine did right before I had to bring it home on a flat bed. If your R/R doesn't have any cooling fins on it, I'd get it out of there before it strands you somewhere. Welcome aboard, I've got the same bike.

Is there a prefered place that everyone get's their R/R from?
Or am I stuck going to an "authorised dealer"?

The one with the fins, thats the diamond shaped one?
Does anyone have a PN?

thanks

Good eye! Either the bike's been down or some squid thought it'd look cool. Another one of those things to add to the "Stupid things the PO did to my bike" thread.

Levers

Haha... my PO did the same thing to my brake lever but cut the clutch lever in have for a "shorty." Good buy. It was the sound that did it right? That's what got me.

Yeah,
Things I need to repair/replace:
- battery (dead)
- front turn signals (left-dying; right no lens)
- levers (p.p.o. bent them forward -- no idea why... but also no idea how he got both of them bent so evenly)
- R/R (possibly... looking at this thread... will update)

Wish list
- fairing

The sound with the 2Bros is awsome. My friend I went with got wet just listening to her growl.
I love the power and lightness.
My old VFR felt heavier. I dont know how the weight compares, but in terms of handling in rushhour traffic in Tokyo, initial feel was that the VTR is more nimble. Maybe in a few more weeks, I will start missing my VRF...

Thanks for all the welcome.
Once I get the battery replaced, I will update on the R/R issue.

Yeah, two of my buddies came to my house one day after a ride. One with a 00 VTR and the other with 02 R6. Both of them were trying to sell me thier bikes. R6 was streched 6", but was what I wanted. I was going to "Fix" it. lol The R6 started up and reved to infinity, the the VTR started and reved and the debate was over(the vtr had 2bros)! Now I have a VTR!

Your bike looks good compared to mine. I can't figure out how they bent those levers either, maybe some heat was used . I have always cut down my dirtbike levers for two finger action. They even sell short levers for dirtbikes.

Check out how my bike was when I bought it.

Just as an update,
It was just a dead battery. I put it on a charger several times (we have a couple of industrial battery chargers in the office), but it was WEAK.
Got a new one, dropped it in. Started on the first try, and all of the electrical was back on-line.

Next step, get new front signals.
Prob go with the flush mounts on ebay...

Thanks for the help guys!!
