Interesting bit of math i did

Cost to drive my vehicles

To work:
Car $7.10 (round trip)
Bike $3.45 (round trip)
323mi (range of tank in Saab):
Car $67.15
Bike $34.37
If I were to drive the car to and from work and nowhere else for a month cost would be $133.05
If I were to ride the bike to and from work and nowhere else for a month cost would be $68.32
Savings: $64.73

If I just used it for commuting to and from work it would pay for itself in 5yrs if ridden year round

If I drive to and from work, go to the Cape Cod (200mi round trip) 2 times and run 100mi worth of misc the Saab costs $237.00

If I do the same thing on the bike it would cost me $121.70
Cost savings $115.30

At this rate the bike would pay for itself in 2 years 10 months 20days and 10hrs if ridden year round

If I got rid of the Saab and bought a prius it would pay for its self in 12 years 9mo 28 days 19 hrs and 12 min

Based on 37mpg (bike) 19mpg (Saab) and $3.95/gal gas

Let me know if my math sux but the hawk is defiantly the way to go. the 37mpg is an average of intown and highway riding.

Did you figure in insurance costs & oil changes, as well?

...sounds like you need like two or three bikes to make the cost savings even greater

My insurance for two bikes is $150 a year, less than half the cost of my worn out econocage. Another couple things... I don't carry or buy a bunch of **** I don't need, I only end up traveling with the right kind of companion, and I save a bunch of time getting there faster!

To me, a hybride car only makes sense in stop-and-go traffic. For anything else, the same amount of power is required to propel the vehicle, and it all comes from gasoline, only you lose efficiency in the double power conversion.

I did the same math and bought a cheap, used Honda. I didn't have room for the extra vehicle and it was more maintenence and general PITA, although I like dthe car.

My conclusion was, the best thing to do is get my truck paid off, have no car payment and drive it into the ground, at 17-20 MPG.

I bought my bike last March. I have ridin it since, my car is for grocerys (anything that won't fit into a backpack) and thunder/lightning storms ONLY!! :0) I have actually grown to hate driving my car. My friends ask me if I still own a car...haha.

Sassage,
I have seen bikes with snow chains one them (believe it or not).
In Japan, the mail man delivers by scooter... ALL year. And when it snows, they wear chains!!
Just a thought =p

I read somewhere else that tires cost quite a bit more per mile than a car and should be included in the cost comparison. eg. rear tire $150/200 and 10K miles or 4 cents per mile

I bought the SH specifically so my wife could drive our car, and leave the F350 Powerstrike at home. $5.00 for a gallon of diesel?! With insurance and oil, I am saving around $1500/year commuting on my bike. I am only factoring in riding 150 days per year.

Snow chains? Holy crap.
Count me out.

The Toyo's for my truck cost $1200 and might go 40,000 miles, so I think I am doing alright.

I was going to mention the cost of tires for the hawk also.. they NEED to be figured into the cost...

I ride my bike to and from work every day I can (no rain).. all year long now for the past two years of owning it. My Sierra gets 18 MPG around town.. up to 22 avg on highway... Bike is around 38 MPG.. almost double?

I almost commute everywhere on my shawk. Heck of a lot better mpg than my mustang...lol

I don't understand people wanting to buy a brand new (expensive) hybrid to save money. I even did a college paper on the cost effectiveness of them.

Go with a Bike.....much cheaper and more fun too!

What about...
Cost of tires - m/c vs. auto
Cost of maintinence (chain, oil changes, etc.) - m/c vs. auto

Bought my first bike in '81 to save gas, or at least that is what I told my wife at that time.
Now its just for fun with the extra mpg as a bonus.

Saabs tend to get rid of themselves anyway.
