Howdy!
Hi Folks, just joined the group.
I've been riding my '98 for about five years - rode it around the country, literally, last year. I'm still getting a kick out of it, even after test riding other bikes, like the Triumph Sprint that I rode today.
I've got a question about oil consumption but I'll save it for another thread (one was recently started).
By the way, I'm in San Jose, CA. I'm a regular at a local forum so my presence here will be occasional, but I'm looking forward to absorbing your experience and knowledge and contributing when I can.

Re: Howdy!
Gadget,
Welcome!
I've only been around a month or so and love the site.
Great folks (who ride a great bike!)
I flew into San Jose for the drive down to Carmel and 3 days at Laguna Seca.
(That is one screwed up airport with all the construction.)
Brian
BTW, my bike does burn oil. Mostly when riding the poop out of it on The Tail of the Dragon. I stays between 4,000-9,000 rpm for miles. Often between 6 and 9K. Many, many hard runs thru the rpm range.
I just keep a watch on the window and add a little as needed.

Re: Howdy!
I got my oil changed in april, and I've ridden about 1,200 miles, and my oil is still well between the lines. my rides are mostly commuting about a half hour. but its spirited riding. my bike has about 11,500 miles. guess I'll keep my fingers crossed.

My buddy, who I spent the MotoGP weekend with (whoohoo!), said he didn't see any smoke.
Anyone know how (if?) to check poor sealing at the valve guide? I suppose the first thing to do is check the spark plugs to see if they're oily, eh?
