How do you check to see if the front forks are straight?

Hi all,

How do you check the front forks to see if they're straight or bent? I always use my eye sights (but sometimes I don't want to believe my own eyes after a few huge wheelies). Please let me know if there are better methods to do it without taking it to the shop. Any sorts of guages or dials or any equipments, tools? Thank you!

You could use a square or any straight object like a ruler or take them apart and poll them on a flat surface.

The proper way to check them is to dissassemble them, put them in v-blocks and measure the runout with a dial indicator. .2 mm is the maximum runout. If they are bent but not crimped, they can be straightened.

First gear 10'O clock wheelies and I weight about 240lbs, I doubt it if the front forks can be bent by a few wheelies, but excessive wheelies will not do any good either. Just curious to see what other people think.

I think the first symptom of excessive wheelies is fork oil leaks, correct me if I'm wrong. I’ve never seen people bend their forks by simply pulling wheelies, usually crashes, or running into something head-to-head.

I use a metal ruler to check them. You'll want to take them out of the triples because they usually bend right at the bottom of the lower triple. If the ruler doesn't lay perfect against the tube then you've got trouble. If it's not too bad they can be straightened, as mine were.

I used the Frame Man in Sacramento California. They charged me $75 to straighten one tube. It was totally disassembled, I sent them just the stanchion tube by itself.
